: HELP --Transfer Case Bearing

After breaking my '73 three-speed transfer case, Cruiserbrett graciously provided me with a bare case that he thought was a '74 or "transition year" case. Everything fits fine EXCEPT for the bearing on the end of the input shaft. The 3-speed bearing has an o.d. of 72mm (2.834") while the journal on the 4-speed case is 75mm (2.950").

Can anyone tell me where I can get the bearing to fit the 3-speed input shaft and the 4-speed case:confused:

I just recently had to do something similar for a project using a 69 case, 16 spline shaft, which required the "transitional" bearing.

That particular bearing for the "transitional" TCase is available from SOR, for not to bad of a nominal cost <$30.00

That is actually the opposite of what Jack needs. He has the larger outer diameter bearing and the smaller 10 spline output of the tranny. Unfortuanately that bearing will not work....

Jack,
I have a bare three speed case that will solve the stuff right away...let me know if you need it.

I was hoping someone might have done this and have a bearing number. I will try the bearing shops in Eugene and if that doesn't work, I'll just machine a sleeve to hold the smaller 3-speed bearing into the 4-speed case.

I may have a spare. Actually might have 2 new, 1 used - don't ask why... used OEM, new KOYO and another new ??? Will check tonight when I get home. It should be available from most bearing shops - but I may be able to make you a deal... If not, I will at least get you the pn's.

Item in question: rear output bearing with od for 74 or later case, and id for 3-speed transmission (or in my case SM420). Is this what you're looking for?

Thank you, Bill. Yes, that is exactly what I am looking for.

Ok, I've gone thru my parts boxes and I've got 3 bearing #'s that I think might work. They all fit the 76 t-case and the 74 transition case I have in the garage (od), don't fit the 76 4-speed output shaft (too small), but I don't have a 3-speed or SM420 lying around to verify id...

NACHI 63/32R (# on outer race) from a 74 transition t-case I got from Brian at Extreme Bends (Canada).

KOYO 63/32N (# on outer race) C3 (# on inner race) from an aftermarket rebuild kit for a 74 transition t-case - bearing has a snap ring almost to the outside edge of the od (could probably use with or without).

NACHI 3OBCS19 (# on outer and inner race, with an N spaced 1/3 around on the od [bearing #, JAPAN, and N] - O could be a 0 who knows?) this is a sealed bearing with 63/32NSL stamped on the nylon sealing rings) purchased from a local bearing warehouse. It also has the snap ring groove in the exact same location as the KOYO.

The 3rd NACHI appears to have a slightly smaller id, but I seem to remember fitting it to the SM420 before I used another t-case on the install.

Hope this helps. I'm a typical garage mechanic, so I would'nt expect much more detail (no I don't have a mic to verify sizes). Let me know you'd like to purchase the 3rd NACHI for whatever you think it's worth - purchased new and never used.

Thank you very much Bill, many virtual  for responding. Look for a PM tomorrow after I check my local bearing shop.
