as good as that sounds--- nawwwwwwww. there are many folks that have been involved a lot more that i, and have done countless hours of research into the history of the area.
I just happened to be there at a time when access was open and the group i hung with was young and foolish enough to want to go/see/look/ and do what they could in the surrounding area.

Since i didn't have a rig that would keep up with most of it, the photog'in fell to me-----

but 'our' time in 'history' was an enjoyable experience i will always chearish.

In the area of Goler... Goler is open.:p
...well, Im not just going to tell you where to go. Maps and books are good, or tag along with one of us...:flipoff2:

ok.
All the currently open roads on the west side of the Panamint Mountains are normally accessable by unlocked, and even many un-lifted 4wd vehicles (not AWD). But this can change with the weather.

The Salt Tram (Swansea Grade) is in the Inyo Mountains about 45 minutes west of Panamint Springs. It can also be seen in Saline Valley.
I usually use Panamint Springs Resort as a base when visiting the valley. Even though its at the north end, its in the middle of everything to see, and has the only gas for some ways... As an example, Goler is about 45mins south of PSR, Stovepipe Wells is about 30mins East.

Green sticker vehicles are not permitted in DVNP, so check your maps.

the 'salt tram' is a trip in its self---
as is Cerro Gordo--

a loop that i hope to do again someday---- the way we used to--
395 to Olancia (GAS) then 190 the death Valley road to the top/northern end of Panamint Valley, hang a left (north) and drop down Grapevine into the Saline Valley-- the west side WASHBOARD road passing the lower end of the tram way, up to the right turn to 'palm springs' (the hot springs-- clothing optional), north over Steel pass into the Eureka valley, past the dunes and out to the east into Death valley at the north end. south to Scotties Castle for gas, to the cut off for (spelling on this one)--- Ubehebe Crater, the race track, tea ketel junction, Lippencott mine, down into Eureka valley and out Grapevine---Olancia (gas)--

did it in a two day trip, sleeping under the stars in Eureka valley---

also stopping along the way to check stuff out------ but is still a long haul-

in 'the day', the club i ran with had an agreement with NPS to maintain Steel Pass to be 4X-able (along with Sherman pass)---

did the trip in my 92 toyota p/u 4X (course, that was @1994 !!!)

Last time I was down there the gas station was closed. The bartender at the resort said it was closed for good, but that was over a year ago, so maybe things have changed. Can anyone confirm?

Just over 1 year ago (mid March, '06), PSR changed owners. The last days of the previous owners were a dark time for the place.
Alot has changed (for the better) in the last year.
The pumps are open, and will only close if they run out of gas or have a technical problem. I have not known them to run out of gas in the last year, although they have posted on their website temporary increases in price when supplies got low. This was to encourage people to only take what they needed until the truck arrived and prices came back down accordingly.

Now...
Back to Krustys old pix. :D

Good to hear, now(when it cools down) I can ride my Harley from Ridgecrest to Vegas through Death Valley. With PSR pumps closed my 2.3 gallon tank said no.

wow. imagine back in 1965, panamint springs was owned by charles snellstrom and wife. they had a daughter (lea) that we shared rides with to go to school in trona. i was living up in wildrose station. we had two gas pumps in wildrose that were filled by truck from trona. we generated our electricity. no TV, no phone:eek:

Hey Krusty, I'd love to see some of your old pics too. We put together a little gathering every October at PSR. I'll take up a fund and keep the cold ones coming your way if you bring out the photo albums. A few of the local old timers and more than one of your neighbors will be there. The trail runs wont be very hardcore, but the alcohol flows well into the morning and all are welcome at the fire.

I was just reading and trying to keep up with your stuff here, when Krusty's posts made me wanna share an old pic.
This link is to me taking a pic of my first OHV. It's my dad and brother -- mid 1960's. Truetracs on the front; hay bailers on the rear. This is how we got around the desert in those days.

You know it is funny...look at my Lobster from the 1960's. Then imagine it with tube frame in stead of chopped down, shortened orig Studebaker frame.
Hmmmmm....oh, ok, take off the hay bailer tires and put on some Red Labels or 37 inch BFG KM2's and well, you know....what goes around comes around.

My father, John Gunderman, passed away last year at the age of 67. He had several pictures from various trips up to Panamint. I will definitely dig them out and scan them in. I am hoping I run into some old-time wheelers that may have known him. He drove a 1967 CJ6, yellow, full cage on 33's, winch, lockers. Pretty awesome Jeep for 40 years ago.
