: Ford 3 liter in a Toyota ('85)

I've got a free Ford 3 liter (1995 model) that I've looked at and though "what if I put it in the 4Runner". I don't have a tranny or computer for it though.

I currently have two 22RE's that need some work done to them. However, I also want to get a little more power out of my 1985 4Runner.

It this even worth it or would I be better off going with a real power gain like the 4.3 or something? The Ford needs a headgasket and front and rear seals.

What trannies (auto preferred) could bolt up to this motor and futher more, what tranny that has an adapter to mate to a Toyota t-case (dual cases)?

I'm counting on some of you motor heads. I done absolutely ZERO research and I'm not very good with motors in general.

For some interesting reading - get the Advanced Adapters Tranny / Transfercase guides.

From the trannies that bolt up to Toyota transfers - you can figure out what engines could "theoretically" work.

IMHO - if yer not good w/ engines - stick to the known swaps.

good advice Ed, but I have a speical situation. My brother is a mechanic and is good with engines. He's the one that asked me if I wanted the motor. He kind of wants to put it in my 4Runner with me. I just thought I'd check into it before talking to him some more.

Was this a front wheel drive 3.0l or rear wheel drive? the blocks are different. for an auto trans, you will be looking at the A4LD
(LD standing for light duty) The 3.0 has about as much power as your 22re, and would be a total custom install. Given that you have no electronics and the engine will most likely need to be overhauled/ heads replaced. (they warp pretty bad) I would steer clear of that swap. Now I think a Ford 3.8L SC backed by a T45 5 speed would be sweet. Factory intercooled supercharger:)

Make sure you keep a set of head gaskets and head bolts in the glove box :D

3.0 is all on its own it shares nothing so your stuck with the A4ld for a auto tranny if ya want a good swap do a 2.9 or a 4.0
that way you can run a c4-5 tranny with A/A to your toy case
