Hi all: My friend Blake (HeyBeerMan on POR) and I completed our first ring and pinion install yesterday. This is the first of a pair of 60s we're building for my YJ. Started with the rear (standard cut), 5.13 gears, welded.
I had completely stripped the housing and brought it, new gears, new carrier and install kit to Blake's house (he's got all the tools and all the common sense!!). I downloaded the install instructions from Randy's and we got at it. Neither of us had done it before, but the process seemed straight-forward and Blake had all the necessary tools.
Nice job, BeerMan, is on me!
Took less than four hours overall (er, once we figured out that the pinion depth shims go underneath the bearing race!), not including the time to hone out an old set of carrier bearings.
This post is just a go-fer-it type thing to anyone sitting on the fence. Doing your own gears is very possible if you're patient and have access to the right tools. No real problems, we just kept a written tally of where we were at as far as shimming and whatnot. It took about four tries to get the pinion depth within acceptable range. We ended up with .007 backlash and a very nice pattern.
Now on to the front ...
