: notched rear frame for shocks
apeters89 06-03-2007, 06:50 PM I'm really sucking at the search tonight. Anyone got pictures of theirs?
I've gota set of F250 shock towers that I'm thinking about doing this with, just wanted to know what gotcha's people had, as well as any progress pictures someone may have of actually doing the work.
flame away...
05Willys 06-03-2007, 08:21 PM You mean to tell me BTF didn't give you extended towers:shaking:

:flipoff2:they did do it all in a single day after all... :flipoff2:
so you got no pics or experience at this question huh? :(
IslanderXJ 06-03-2007, 08:32 PM I buddy of mine used them in the back of his J-10, but he didn't notch the frame, he cut through the bed.
wildman4x4nut 06-03-2007, 09:03 PM Are you talking about this? http://www.stu-offroad.com/suspension/rearshock/rearshock-1.htm
I bought the Poly Performance kit and this is what it looks like.

apeters89 06-03-2007, 09:07 PM YES. I'll be using the F250 shock towers, but that's what I'm looking at doing. any hiccups or problems when you did it? Anything I need to watch out for? What did you use to do the cutting?
edit: yes, the pics in the link are what I was looking for!

Good glad I could help. I used a angle grinder & cut off wheels to do it. It was a little scarey too. Make sure you do as stated about bending the bottoms out a little and then cut your notch in a / \ .

so what kind of worries do people have regarding frame strength? Is anyone adding any support on the back side of the frame rail?

shouldn't be a problem unless you have half your suspension hanging from the back ;)
I got scared away by how little is left on the frame. Unless you gusset the hell out of the frame I would be leery of cutting it up. And I really like to cut stuff!

Your boxen in the frame. I ran with Stu at Moab this year and he still has the same setup on his Jeep. I have only had mine done for about 6 month so I can't really comment yet. But from what I have seen no I don't think there are any worries.

Stu also has a TJ ;)
wildman4x4nut 06-03-2007, 10:06 PM And?
apeters89 06-03-2007, 10:10 PM And?
he's saying that a TJ doesn't use any portion of the frame behind the spring mounts to support any part of the vehicle. Therefore there is likely less stress on that piece that has been cut out.
ie: a YJ still has to support the other end of a leaf spring on the frame behind the shock mount
Dookey 06-03-2007, 10:11 PM And?
AND the last time I checked Aaron still have leaf springs on the rear of his rig hanging half his suspension off the frame past the notch.
At least that's what I see in pictures he's posted.

I have no doubt you could truss it up pretty well and make it last. I just didn't want to cut into my tub to do it. So I left my shocks inboard until I went full widths.
wildman4x4nut 06-03-2007, 10:16 PM Sorry didn't realize we were talking about a YJ. The Poly Performance kit is also used for Coil overs but I guess all the weight is still right there at the cut. I would still say it isn't an issue with the number of frames I've seen notched for steering and the like without issues.
Dookey 06-03-2007, 10:20 PM Aaron what are you doing for bump stops?

do we need to??? not for fab work, but if we want to get together for some  and :blender: I'm all for it!!!
I can't remeber how wide you are in the rear, but I don't remember you being full width. I just notched my frame on my yj to run coilovers. I've got a C&C 14b (63.5") and barely, just barely rub the springs on the coilovers. I With a regular shock you might get away with a little narrower, but it would be very close. Search my user name for pics of the frame notch.

You are correct my rear axle is not full-width, it's 64.5" WMS to WMS. I am thinking I might be able to get away with only frenching that shock mount half-way into the frame. That would gain me some extra clearance without compromising as much strength from the frame rails there.
I'll do a search on your username later tonight, I'm at work right now and can't spend much time online :(
apeters89 06-04-2007, 10:17 AM I found 95yj's build up here:

some of his pics for future reference...
bigblacktj 06-04-2007, 04:01 PM I just cut the brace supporting the back of frame, then cleaned the frame up. Then just welded some 4x2 tubing behind where I was going to cut out. I then welded some DOM across for new support brace. After all that I notched out frame and plated up holes. I didnt cut all the way through frame I left back half. Took about 5 hours for everything.

Do you have any pics of the bracing?
bigblacktj 06-05-2007, 10:59 PM Will take pictures tomorrow then I am cutting it off because need to runn shocks inside frame and into cab. I went to narrowed axles for comp(try and stay in cones) and also put rear steer in.

What do you think about something like this?
Red being plate of some kind, pink being a piece of tube.
edit: of course, I'd hope it would look better than my shitty paint drawing here.
