: AZ Fender Chopping
anyone up for some fender chopping withing the next month? i'm planning on getting new tires and would like to have the rear fenders cut 2", but...i've never done it before, and i'd love some help (aka...someone to do it who'll work for beer and maybe some cash). if you can help me out...let me know. thanks.
JackA 06-03-2002, 05:45 PM Dude, you're kidding right? I really hope you're kidding.:D

Be nice Jack!
I don't have a sawzall but i do have a grinder with a cutoff wheel!
It worked for chopping my rear end off!
I could probably help you out.
I can get a sawzall (from a friend) if that's what you need.
Clifton 06-03-2002, 09:07 PM I'm pretty good with the torch:D
For my front fenders, I layed down a good strip of masking tape, ran a line exactly 2" from the original curves with a sharpie and then used a craftsman skillsaw with a metal blade and it cut fine, nice and clean and I could control it extremely easily.
i don't know if my truck is different, but on the front and back lower sections of my rear fenders there is less than 1" before you get to the inner fender tub, so, jack, that's why i need the help, cuz i didn't want to cut into the truck. if it was just like the front, then i'd do it myself, but it's not, and i don't have a welder. so...anyone other than jack wanna help?? let me know. thanks
Coffee Boy 06-03-2002, 10:23 PM Hey-
If you need a truck to practice on bring a case of beer and I will turn you loose on my truck with a sawzall:D Its a 87 and I have nothing to lose, its all coming off one way or another:rasta:  :smokin:
Dave
ROKTOY 06-03-2002, 11:34 PM Man...nuthin' like letting someone loose cutting on your truck.
Watch it, or you'll be stripped naked and tubed before you know it.
Jay
coffee boy, you want me too? got a compressor? i was thinking about getting one of those air body saws. but maybe i'll just pickup an air grinder with cutting wheel and a sawzall. e-mail me at roctoy@toughtoysaz.com
only one prob, how the h*ll do i work around the front and back?? anyone got pics of the process and before and after pics?? since i don't have a welder...what are my options?? fiberglass and / or bondo?
ROKTOY 06-04-2002, 12:22 AM Hmmmm......roctoy?
Jay
you knew that was my e-mail address. used to be at juno.com. we've exchanged e-mail a couple times a LONG time ago, well over a year. and no, i met you AFTER i chose that e-mail. i realized that when i was reading about your 4.3 swap and your custom console. i'm like, oh man...i just copied a great, and didn't even know it.
ROKTOY 06-04-2002, 06:36 AM Ha ha....just kiddin' with ya. ;)
Good luck with the trimming.

yup...another.
now, can / will someone help me out with the cutting of my rear fenders?
JackA 06-04-2002, 09:20 AM I doubt you can cut 2'' without getting into the inner wheel. What's the difference? It's not like you have to worry about rain. When I trimmed the wheelwells, I removed the inner well completely. This is a simple job. Offset tin snips and a cutoff wheel work the best.
Are those supposed to be wheeling pix? Or is that the road to the trail?:D
AZToy 06-04-2002, 10:44 AM Now this is a road to the trail:eek:
JackA 06-04-2002, 11:25 AM I thought that was the "on" ramp.:D

Hey Mark, Anymore pics from that weekend???
now...should i change the thread topic to "I'm Jack, I'm a Dick, look at my pics of real trails"?? no...that's the trail. i've got an IFS rig, i'm a college student, not making a lot of money, and it's my DD, so. with that said, enough of the pics and bashing, and whatnot, and get to the real question. is anyone willing to help me out? if you're not gonna help, don't reply, simple as that. make your own thread if you're looking to swap pics.
ALSO - AN SAS IS PLANNED, AFTER I GET A TRUCK TO DRIVE ON THE STREET, so don't even mention that to me.
Bad Karma 06-04-2002, 02:15 PM Hmmmmmmm, maybe you would be happier at a different Extreme Rockcrawling site. And, no, I won't help you.
BK, thanks for an answer. i just figured ALL of you guys have done it, and all of you were at a point when you had a rig like mine, so i just figured that one of you would be willing to help me out. also...i've been a member of this site for almost a year, if i wanted to leave, i would have already.

Nice come back! So can any body help this guy out? Or is everbody to fucking "kool" to work on a IFS rig? Come AWN, dude needs some help with his shit and every body is dissin' em. That's not cool.
Use the search "four runner trimmed fenders"
Try here Cobb (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57620&highlight=four+runner+trimmed+fenders)
Bad Karma 06-04-2002, 02:51 PM My point is just do it and maybe you will find a new way to accomplish your task. If you just do what everyone on the BB dictates to you there is no innovation and we all drive the same junk. It's not rocket science, it's just cutting metal. Try it, you may like it............:D
And, yes, I am too cool to work on an IFS rig.
EricZ 06-04-2002, 04:43 PM Seems to me that people have offered to help.
I offered to help and you did not reply.
What do you want?
Do you want me to track you down to offer to help you?
Do you want me to come to you to help you?
The guys that are responding here are good guys and would help you. But they will tease you.
For being on Pirate for over a year you still have really thin skin.
If you are asking for help - take what you can get and be thankful.

Eric, i appreciate the offer, i didn't realize that's that it was, i thought it was a tool offering. do you have a welder also?? i'm not sure how to go about doing this, cuz i wasn't sure if i needed to tub the fenders. if i do, are you willing to help me out.
mark - you didn't hurt my feelings, it's just this isn't the place for pics of a tube truck.
steve - a Body lift is a no go, i don't like them

I can help with the cutting of the fenders.
I do not think you need to tub them.
Yes, I have a welder but i don't think there is any welding involved.
I haven't even tubbed my fenders. Just clearenced them with a 4lb sledge.
This weekend i'm running Armeggedon and next weekend i have to work and then i'll be in Mississippi for 2 weeks.
If you can wait a month or so then i can help you.
can anyone jump in quicker?? i'm in NEED of tires, and my planned 33" MTRs are looking mighty nice. i've got a set of glass fenders on the way, sometime this week i hope. so the rear would like to be cut. let me know either here or drop me a line.
you sure you;ll need to cut the rear for 33's? maybe not
sschaefer3 06-04-2002, 07:51 PM I bet a local body shop would have time quicker. This may sound like a smart ass answer but If you want it done really well what better place to go. Nice and clean.
Work a little OT on that summer job.

Thick skin huh? I think you sound like a wimp. I was just ribbing you a bit and you had to start calling names. If you can't cut your own sheetmetal, what are you going to do on a trail? Nobodies going to hold your hand.:flipoff2:
I gave helpful info how I trimmed my fenders. If you're going to get into this hobby maybe you should aquant yourself with tools. They are amazing. Tin snips are cheap too. It's topics like this one that water down the board. Anyways, every post needs some pictures.
Jack - everyone has to get into the hobby somehow, and i'm sure you didn't just dive right in. do you honestly think that cutting out the inner wells entirely is a viable answer for a DD truck? thanks for the input though. i'm pretty sure i could cut my own sheet metal, but i'd like to be able to get it back together and weather proof, which i can't do, mostly because i've never done anything like this before. i'm glad you think i sound like a whimp. to me, your an egotistical dick, who needs to stop flapping his mouth to anyone who's just starting out in this HOBBY. aren't we supposed to have fun and help those who are just starting out? i thought that's what made a hobby fun. learning and teaching, maybe i was wrong. also...you might want to change your sig to "egotistical dick" not just "dick." In responce to the aquaint myself with tools comment, i'm working on it, but like i (and many others) said, i gotta start somewhere.
Steve - um...body shop huh, yeah, if i could afford that, i wouldn't have taken time to ask if anyone can help me do it and work for beer, and some cash. thanks for the thought though. i might give a couple a call and see how they'd go about it, but i can't afford to spend the money at one.
BRBx4 - i don't NEED to if i'm just gonna street drive my truck, but i 50/50 dirt/street with it, so i'm gonna need to ba able to flex the rear without rubbing.
thanks for the suggestions, but i'm guess i'm tackling this on my own.

my brother and i both ran 35's in the rocks with no trimming in the back. i trimmed less than 2 inches for my 38's. pound some with a hammer and quit yer bitchin.....
pmurf1 06-04-2002, 09:51 PM Cobb, if you actually would go out and run or at least walk a trail with us AZ guys, we'd probably be more inclined to give you a hand. And I'm not talking about coming out with us this weekend just because you want something done the next weekend for cheap. It's not like we don't go often enough!
Coffee Boy doesn't have a truck built yet, and he still will come out once in a while. Homoburrito too, and he even attends land use meetings. Nickbike, and others too. You don't have to necessarily run all the nasty trails with us to enjoy hanging out and watching. I did it often enough with Jeep guys before I built my toy. I would help all these guys even though they aren't the typical "hardcore" guys that we usually run with. (As long as beer and food is involved!)
Like Bad Karma said, this shit isn't rocket science. You'd better learn how to work on your own shit if you want to actually wheel that thing. Or have a fat wallet. If you think someone is gonna chop your fenders and tie up their garage and time for a day for some beer, good luck. And then help you bondo or fiberglass it? I thought this was a rockcrawling site, not a show and shine site. Or did I hit the wrong link?

how do you learn without instruction? i've never done any kind of body work before, and i'd like to learn. so i guess i'm just jumping in, and we'll see what happens. and i'd love to come out and walk along with some of you, i just haven't had the time until this summer. i hope that you all don't despise me too much to actually let me partake in some of the AZ activites, now that i actually have time.

What "weather" are you afraid of?You do realize we are in Arizona right? Its funny how similar this post is to the last one about a dent in your tailgate.DD or not you need to wait until your nuts drop before you get into this hobby. If you wheel your truck 50% of the time you are gonna get body damage. FACT OF LIFE! Are you going to give everyone a new chance to flame you every time you scratch a door? When you crack your new fiberglass fenders doing something stupid what are you going to do? Take a chance and cut the shit.If you dont like it,cut some more.If you still dont like it hit it with a big rock. You can sit back, have a beer and make up some bullshit story about how it happened on the trail. If your friends are like you they will believe it:rolleyes:You still have the other side to try something different. If you have this plan for a SAS after you get a street truck anyways,WTF do you care what it looks like? Really-it sounds like you need some all terrains and a whole load of Brute Force parts.Your favorite speed bump awaits you.
Or you can just Slam it:flipoff2:
RogueDogg1985 06-04-2002, 09:58 PM Ok now for my 2 cents everyone.... I know Cobb, he's a great guy. He's helped me out tremendously when I was stuck on my truck doing my tranny swap. Now for some of you *(you know who you are)* he sounds like a "whimp", I'm here to tell you he's nothing of the sort. He has a question, he presents his case very well and has some good feed back, now how I see it is, yeah it's sheetmetal, but....BUT unless your a very qualified body guy just having at it with some cutters is not a good idea for someone who has never done this before, becuase it's not so easy to go back and fix a major mess up and make it look good. And lasttime I checked the local library and book store doesn't have volumes covering chopping your fenders off your toy *(Correct me if I'm wrong)*. Now I'm more than willing to help in anyway I can and he knows that, and he knows that some of you are as well. Now for the others who seem to have forgotten their roots...what's the deal. You bash someone for not wanting to just dive in with some torches, or metal cutters, or sawzalls...You have your "roktoys" and you show off your rigs on some boulders...woohoo. I can put my stock toy in that postion, take a pic and have a crane lift me back out, does that mean I'm a guru on making my ride a roctoy? NO I think not, so the next time someone *(ANYONE)* has a question, or is looking for some help, unless you have info that might help them, or are willing to put alittle of your own sweat into it to pay back the guys that helped you when you were coming up in the ranks...than don't even bother wasting our time with your worthless posting...talk about watering down the board. Well enough said I think, but either way I'm here to stay, I'm here to put your rigs to shame and if there is a problem with that, we'll have to settle that on the trails...Hope to see ya'll there.
ROGUEDOGG
Hmmm, the last guy who didn't snivel, came out and lent a hand, came over to our places and learned while he helped work on rigs now has a very capable rig for under 3 grand thanks to lots of of donated parts and time on our part. Funny how that works, huh Matt?;) He will be running Armegeddon with us Saturday.
Cobb,I think you need to find a different BB to whine on..
RogueDogg1985 06-04-2002, 10:17 PM Zags....you need work done? I can help, only one problem...I don't even know who you are or where you live...see my point, just cause Cobb hasn't helped you, or B.K. or JackA doesn't mean he doesn't help anyone, he came over to my house and stayed into the wee hours of the morning helping me and also has given...yes GIVEN me parts I so badly needed for my truck and has never asked for anything in return...so you see Cobb doesn't whine, he asks and he gives just like any other decent human being on this god forsaken planet ya'll have corrupted. So p!ss off.

let me just take a few seconds to tell you all something that pisses me off. All the whiner 'college boys' on this board that use that as an excuse for everything. "I'm a poor college boy, i don't have any money, it's my DD, i have IFS, i don't know how." Who gives a fuck? Not me. How 'bout all the guys on this board who have jobs, family's, etc. What's the difference? I too happen to be in college, have been for the last 2 years and have about 3 to go. I also have a fucking job, and work on my own shit, and yes, I pay my own housing, school, food, utilities, everything, etc. For cryin' out loud Cobb, by the time you posted all that you've posted on this thread, you could've cut all your fenders and then some, take some initiative:rolleyes: For what it's worth, I cut about 2" off my fenders a few months ago, took me about half an hour, and i did it by myself. I wasn't born with some special knowledge about cutting fenders, i just did it, now you do the same. When your done, you could call the body shop and go buy some metal adhesive, apply it to the inside of your truckbed, and you'll be done. This is not that hard. K, that's it, get to work and stop whinin'
alright, for all you "i've done it, stop whining" guys, any one with pics of the process?? i'm not doing it the CAZ way, so, can anyone atleast post pics of their trims?

Damn dude.... You just jump right in and give it a try. Last year when I did the SAS on my Tacoma... I had never touched a welder. But I wanted a solid axle truck, and did not have the money to pay somebody to do it. So I went out and bought a welder and went to town. My first welds sucked... but I continued on. Now I have done several solid axle trucks, made sliders, bumpers, ect ect. and my welding is getting better each time.
You dont need somebody to hold your hand to do such a simple task. Grow some balls and just do it!

crawler#976 06-05-2002, 06:49 AM hey Cobb-
If your planning to do a SAS, why not wait till then? You may not need to trim anything if your not going bigger than 35's. By moving the axle forward 1-1/2 with a spring hanger or perch relocation block, you can eliminate most of the clearance problems. I run 35's with NO trimming on the front fenders- and only cleared the back panel of the bed about 5". (I moved the rear axle back 2" from stock when installing the All Pro springs)
as Steve mentioned above, if you want to clear 33's for now, buy a 2" body lift for $99.99 and be done with it--
also, if you want to add some lift to your current IFS, I've still got some Rancho 2" lift T'Bar's layin' around the garage- :flipoff2:

doing a project with out instruction requires you to THINK things thru on your own- you have to PLAN it, and then execute it. You WILL make mistakes- but thats part of the process- and you LEARN from them. that's what FABRICATING is all about- it's a hell of a lot of fun-

trailtoy 06-05-2002, 07:24 AM Okey I have been quite long enough. Roguedogg for someone who's truck probably does not see the dirt you have some big balls. So if you are done running the mall trails and would like to see what your CRAWLER can really do, bring it on. If not keep it in the garage and shut the fuck up.

RogueDogg1985 06-05-2002, 12:22 PM Ok I'm going to try to end this arguing on a good note. Ok so we have some who support Cobb in the method he "chooses" to go about his work on his runner, and we have some who "choose not" to support him, let's part ways and let bygones be bygones. I understand your ride can "run" mine over and you want to park your swampers on my head then my hood...ok so be it. Like Cobb stated this is a HOBBY !!!! it's not a sport or a competition, we're not getting sponsors by trash talking each others rides, there's no million dollar purse at the end of the trail for us, so let's all say we're sorry and have fun on the trails. I'll be first...sorry for my attitude and my comments, I was only trying to back up a good friend of mine *(who I will back up everytime)*, he's a great guy, who has poured his sweat into my truck and has given me parts off his when I've needed them so let's leave it at that. Regaurdless if your a college guy, a husband with a wife and kids, let's just help each other out where we can, meet each other on the trails and have a few brews to end a good ride, SHALL WE???

Bad Karma 06-05-2002, 01:33 PM Let me help.......if you see this: :flipoff2: , it means I was joking.
So much for intelligence. :flipoff2:
(get it now?)
RogueDogg1985 06-05-2002, 01:52 PM Oh well if you were joking...that's fine, I just took it :flipoff2: <-- flipping me off calling me a homo as you were serious due to the nature of the thread that has been going on...
ROGUEDOGG :vader2: Who's your daddy :)
Bad Karma 06-05-2002, 02:14 PM Joking = :flipoff2:
Serious = :flipoff:
I must be in a good mood today.
JackA 06-05-2002, 02:30 PM There was no point in this thread that I was ever mad. I was laughing the whole way. It's funny as hell. Anybody can join us to wheel, watch, or whatever. It's all good. But I still think he's a weiner for being scared to trim his own fenders.:D

ROGUEDOGG
put up or shut up, you ran your mouth, got called out, and now you're going to back down with a :rainbow: apology? No one wants to do anything, other than see you put your rig where your mouth is. what a ding-dong.
Bad Karma 06-05-2002, 02:50 PM My crane is still badass.
dangerber 06-05-2002, 02:59 PM I have read several replies in this thread of people offering help, Cobb, but you get all bent out of shape when someone doesn't give the response you want to hear...How can anyone help you when every suggestion is shot down by you??
Whae I wanted to trim my fenders, I grabbed the closest, logical tool, which happened to be a tin snip, and started snipping away. Pick up a tool, and familiarize yourself with how it works, you'd be amazed at what you can do with tools.
Then, drink a bunch of beer, and get the sawzall out, and do what needs to be done!
Now it's time for you to tell me what is wrong with what I just told you...and for you to make up some other excuse as to why it won't work for you.

Hate to say it, but my IFS 4runner was more hardcore than that rig!!!!
OOh, but he does run splitfire plugs! Look out! :flipoff2:
zags, good call.
dangerber - nothing wrong with your suggestion at all, i was mostly looking for someone with the tools to stand behind me and let me know if what i'm doing is correct. i always hear it's easy, but when i looked at it, something just didn't look right, so i figured i'd ask for help before i did something stupid.
Brian - thanks for backing me up
to all the guys who gave real suggestions, thanks for the input.
i'm hoping to get to trimming next weekend. as it looks, i'm gonna be removing some of the inner wheel well, and i talked to a couple guys who could help me out in welding a piece of metal in there. i'll take pics of before, during, and after, so that we can actually have some to pass around to people new to body work.

RogueDogg1985 06-05-2002, 03:36 PM BORNINAJEEP: I offered an apology and I see you don't accept, and trust me the truck will perform as I say it does...we'll see you on the trails, and hey DON'T forget my beer, I'm a thirsty guy and losers are buying.

RogueDogg1985 06-05-2002, 03:56 PM Actually guys the pink jeep tours were behind us :) It was a fun day, good times with some friends. Is there anything wrong with that? Oh and by the way...at any point in time did I state that my truck was done? NO so keep knocking it the way it is now, I do it myself....only time and money and hard work will show off in the end.... :)

I don't think Kong’s accepts a few beers as payment so they may have been a little too expensive anyway.
Totally kewl 31's & open diffs Dude! I wish my 33's, 5.29 gears & Factory E-Locker could hold up against your awesome truck!!!
Maybe some day I can keep up with you.:(
It's OK there are tons of shiny new truck people just begging (literally) to give Kong’s a lot of money, if they ever get those bolt on sliders done!!!!
AZToy 06-05-2002, 05:06 PM Nice pic Steve.
And the sliders are getting close.
As for working for  it does not seem to be accepted at the major banks.
Cobb and Rogue welcome to the
:vader2: side:D
RogueDogg1985 06-05-2002, 07:21 PM When did I ever mention I pay with  ? It's all good though. I'm having fun anyways. Keep up the good work ya'll.
