: Wheelbase on a TJ

I have been thinking of some different ways to extend the wheelbase of my TJ.

What I have come up with so far is cutting off the front spring and shock mounts and rewelding them back on about 4" foward on the frame. The RE long arms will have to be made longer also.
The steering box would have to be moved and also the track bar mount. This is what I am not sure how to do yet.

Has anyone tried this yet and is there any right up in it or pics.

I did a couple of searches but didn't come up with anything.

Pretty good idea.

If you want to push the wheelbase BACK then you'll have to move the fuel cell also. Consider doing a triangulated 4 link or 3 link to get rid of the trashbar. Might as well do that if youre plannin on extended wheelbases. Just make sure youre final decision will be final...once you start cuttin theyre aint no lookin back.

On our ERoCC TJ we cut the frame in the flat section behind the door and added 12" (did the body work accoringly). That extra wheelbase on a TJ suspension make it work very nicely.

If you search for EROCC you can see action shots from the last competition.

As seen above, that's my TJ. The frame was cut and a box was made to slide up inside the original frame. The "box" was welded inside and out by drilling a couple "thru-holes" to reach the inner areas and then the holes were fill-welded. 3/16" plate was then welded on top of the smaller box to even up the frame. I wouldn't do another 8" stretch tho...... maybe 6" and push the rear axle back some to get the wheelbase I wanted.
That said, I'm working on moving the rear axle back 2-3" now for a total of approx 104-105" wheelbase. BTW: my rear axle is converted to leaves and is SUA at the current time - soon to change.
Like most rigs....... mine is a constant project.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that 8" may have been a little much for what I am looking for. Did you think about just cutting the upper spring mounts off and moving them foward and then pushing the rear back a couple of inches. I was thinking out of the 2 moves I could end up with about 5-6" more, I want to be around 98-100 give or take a little.

You're talking about moving quite a bit of stuff. The front of the TJ frame is curved up over the front axle and you'd be welding everything back on forward of that arc. If you're just talking about pushing the front axle forward a couple inches, do that with the control arms and move the rear axle back as far as you want to come up with the wheelbase you desire.

I have allready moved it with the control arms, I don't think I can push it any further than it is with out making the control arms week by not having enough threds in them.

In rewelding the spring mount back up in the front I was also thinking that sence it dose curve down that I may be even be able to get some more lift out it the conversion by pushing the mount down to make it more surface to weld onto.

I was just trying to think of an alternative to cutting the frame.
