: Engine won't stop running

I recently installed a weber carb, headers, and desmogged my fj60. It cranks like its fuel injected (almost) now and runs great, but I'm having one problem... when I turn the engine off and remove the key it keeps running for several seconds and I'm having to just let out on the clutch for it to actually stop. Can anyone tell me what is wrong here? Thank you.

i know of 2 possibilities, 1: timing is off, or 2:too much carbon build up on top of the pistons keeping it igniting. marvel mysteryoil works wonders or check teh timing, jiMMy

I vote for timing!

Timing is the #1 factor, but thats a little vague! If it's caused by timing, it's because its too advanced, can also be fuel related, or simply the combination of a very hot running engine and I high idle.

Also, another leading cause of this is Demon posession. try sprinkling some holy water down the carb while its running & see if that fixes it. If that doesn't work try wrapping your intake & exhaust manifold (or header) w/ garlic & drive around the block. :D that will surely cure it!!! :smokin:

Your idle fuel cut off solenoid may be stuck open.

Where is the idle fuel cut off solenoid located?

I think that it is on the base of the carb at the front. There is a wire with a spade terminal going to it. It should click when you turn the ignition of and on, but you may have to remove it and clear it out and the port it screws into as well.

I did not know the Webers had fuel cut off soleniods...

Oops, I stand corrected. :rasta: :smokin:

They don't have idle fuel cut offs; maybe that is part of the reason that it runs on.

I had a weber and it never ran on, but I thoughtrun on was due in part to carbon deposits and a hot running engine...

Pull a spark plug and check it out.

Thanks everyone. I'll check the timing this weekend. What does it need to be set to? and is that with the air or anything on. Thanks.

It has been staying on after I cut it off for a few days now, but my last trip it cut off fine twice. If it keeps doing fine should I still check the timing?

Checking the timing is like checking the oil...Just checking it is pretty darn easy, so do it.

Besides, it's not like adjusting the timing is hard either :p

I've got the same problem with my FJ-40. It started when I installed a 38 Weber. Since I installed it I've swapped from a '74 F engine to a '75 2F engine. Same thing. I guess maybe my timing light could be off. I did use it to set the timing on both engines. I'm more inclined to think the carb is too rich at idle. I have a problem getting it to lean out enough using their technique while keeping the screws within about a turn of base as they recommend. I think my final solution will be to get a re-jet kit to help at idle (or do a V-6 swap). The plugs look great so it only seems to be an idle condition. The other thing I have noticed is that with the Weber I'm still under 10 mpg. There may be a common link there. I've heard mumblings that the Webers tend to run rich. Let me know if you figure it out.

I had the same problem. does it continue to run or is it dieseling ? call me crazy but you should check your ground. my would continue to run after you removed the key for a short time. the original ground for everything was through the voltage regulator so if you've changed it or gone to one wire yor getting a ground by accident.A bad ground will also cause other freak problems that have no logical explanation.

Does it run really rough? I'd say its timing. Also, check your idle screw, if its too high, that can also cause improper shutdown.

running too rich dude!

I've finally solved my run-on problem. I wound up taking my 40 to a local VW shop since there aren't any cruiser shops I know of in Yuma. I figured they'd be familiar with Webers. Bingo. We dropped one idle jet down one size, the other down two. I can now set it according the Weber instructions. I used to get run-on at every shut down. I have not experienced it since re-jetting even with our temps running about 115 degrees.
