: moving/eleminating air box

I need the space over the wheelwell on my TJ to put in a 12v bus bar for fused power to the accessories (my cig lighter wire looks like a spiderweb). That big airbox is in the way, but I don't want to pay $100+ for a cold air intake - I would rather try to make something myself. And it looks like those intakes would have a filter in the same place anyway.

Has anyone ever sawed off the air pipe and stuck one of those cone filters on the end? I could bend up an insulated box around it that mates with the hood, and put in some louvers. I would love to hear from anybody that has ever done something like this.

Yes.Just put a cone filter on the sawed off air pipe,no box or any thing around it.Yes I know it sucks in heated air from the engine area. No big deal unless you are supercharged.

lots of possible ideas, and lots of easy searching to be done

I did a cowl intake. If you offroad, a cone filter may not provide enough filtration for dust.

Go with the cowl - unless you don't want a new 3" hole in the firewall.....

I'm going to try to do the HMMWV style snorkle intake off the left end of the cowl sometime this summer - similar install.....

Yeah, I might pass on taking a hole saw to the firewall. The heater gets kinda weak at highway temps when the air is below 0F. I suspect there would be a cold spot around the hole.

I was looking at the specs for those filters and I think I can get one sized for the sawed off duct that will clamp on there with a nice fit. I'll make a box around it that hangs off that radiator support bar, and press out some offset some louvers behind the filter cone to keep it dry.

How is a box around a cone filter help keep out dust? A large cone filter has as much filter area or more then a stock filter
