I'll try to keep an up to date list of our work days so you can have a "traffic report" of where and when we'll be on the trails. Most of our work days here are heavy equipt. work and only require a few of us, but we have some projects that are going to require labor. If you are interested in helping keep the area open you can PM me here, or e-mail me at rob.theurer@sfwda.org, with your contact info and I'll put you on my contact list.

Are all trails staying open or are any closing? We are going to be there on the 30th.

We're going to keep the trails open, but there will be some delays.Trail5 will probably be closed temporarily( about an hour at a time) as we move the dumptrucks in and out.Other than that it will just be closed right where we will be working.I'll try to keep an up to date post on where we will be.

What kind of trail closures can we expect for trail 4 on June 30th?

Our plan is to try to get done with Trail 5 and up through Fain's Ford 6/15-6/20. Then Fix Trail 4 up to the spot past the upper end of trail8 where it is falling off. When we get done with this we will go to trail8 ( unless USFS changes priorities). That all said your answer is that by the 30th we SHOULD be on trail 8, and out of the way.

Rob, thanks for stepping up and getting on here. That's the best idea either you or SFWDA has had. Not everyone gets on the Southern website but thousands get on here. Thanks for the updates and I'd love to help out.

Right now we're rebuilding water diverter berms and cleaning out silt traps. We're also fixing some of the places that the trail is sluffing off and closing illegal trails.

Was just there this past weekend. Up to Fains you all have done a great job. Taken some of the challenge away but understand the reasoning behind the jobs. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the effort in order to let us keep riding Tellico

Did the bridges get built? I heard that they were putting bridges in at Fains Ford and the river crossing on trail 5.

Sorry to be late with this post, we have been distracted with the impending law suit to close the area. June 30 and July1 Rob will be doing work at Fains Ford and I will be hauling rock to Fains in a 5 ton. Trail 5 will be temporarily closed when we are going up with the dump truck. We will have a escort vehicle running ahead of it on trail 4 to give you time to find a place to get off the trail.
Thanks

thank you rob for all your hard work and effort. who is funding all this work that you are doing ? maybe you should start a donation program to help out.
maybe guys that cant come help because its so far to drive might be glad to chip in a little . if i were close by , i would be there every weekend helping you out. ive been to tellico once and i got hooked. im hoping to go back more . infact when i got back home , i tore my rig down , put it back near stock , and started to build a new rig more suited to tellico. its almost complete.

Rob, we saw the truck and the track hoe sitting on T5. Looked like the track hoe had some hydraulic breakage. Anyway, good job at Fains Ford. Looks nice.

As of July 2 we're still at Fain's Ford. We have another work weekend July 13-18. We should get done with Fains and be heading toward the bottom of trail 9. June 30 we blew a line on the trachoe ( thats why the "doggie training pads" were under it) got it fixed and moving the next day. Anyone wanting to make a donation can contact SFWDA's treasurer and tell him that you want to make a donation to the Tellico Trail Fund. This is what helps keep the dump trucks running. ROB

We Will be working (weather and equipt. permitting) July 13th -18th. We will finish Fains Ford and then move up the lower end of trail 8. There will be gravel trucks on 5 and 4 (toward Fains). 5 will be closed temporarily as we are moving trucks (shouldn't be more than an hour at a time). There shouldn't be any long term delays. ROB

Trail Update: We’re almost done with Fain’s Ford; just need a few more loads of rock. From there we’ll be working our way up the lower part of trail 8. The next work weekend will be July 27-Aug1 (Friday –Wednesday).I’d like to thank my dad, Brain and Ashley Sapaugh, Todd Shirley, and Roy Stroud for their help and hard work we wouldn’t have made it this far without them. I’d also like to thank Gunnar Byrd and Grif and Alan Shirley for their help supplying equipment. These are the people that are making it happen to keep this area open.

All the work Looks GREAT Rob. I hate I only get there once a year. Keep up the good work and let us know what we can do from afar. Travis at Blue Ridge 4x4 is a great guy and a good friend. I think he meet some of you at Fains Ford last week.

We have been so busy working we have forgotten to keep up this thread. Aug 10-12 is going to be a busy work weekend. We will have machines (3)working on Trails 4,5,8,11 and12 and maybe 6 if we get time. The dump trucks will be running on 5, 4 and 8 with trail 5 closed intermittently. We will also have volunteers from Up State Cruisers reworking all the trail marker signs and trimming trail 8.

Trail Update Aug 4, 2007
Last week we completed work on the lower end of trail8 tom just past the end of trail 9. We also worked trail 9 up to the bottom of slickrock. For the workdays of Aug 10-15 we have a lot of work scheduled. I’ll be working trail 4 between the ends of trail 8, and then going up the upper end of trail 8.My goal is to get to the upper end of trail 9, but we’ll have to see how it goes. Scott Campbell will have a crew working the front side of 11 and 12. Mitchell Arms will have a crew working trail 4 starting at the trail 1 intersection. Grif Shirley will be removing the rock on 5 that has been giving the gravel trucks problems, and Gunnar Byrd will be running the show. We’ll also be hauling rock between rough water and Fains ford. Additionally there will be a crew from Upstate Landcruisers resigning the trails. This will be a good weekend to stay away from Tellico.
Here are the totals from the last three months of trail work:
Our totals on trail work are as follows:
May 39 hours Labor and 104.5 hours Machine time $6689.50
June 250.5 hours Labor and 312.5 hours Machine time $14,005.50
July 409 hours Labor and 586.5 hours Machine time $29,545.00
This totals to: 698.5 hours Labor
1003.5 hours Machine time
$50,240.00
During this time we hauled over 250 tons of surge stone for trail stabilization
Repaired/cleaned / installed over 150 water berms and silt traps
Made repairs to Fains Ford Crossing
Repaired/replaced 2 culverts
Closed 6 illegal trails/bypasses
In addition there was another 179.5 hours of contractor machine time and over 450 man-hours of repairs/ maint. performed on SFWDA equipment in the field.

The weekend of the 11th of August was a big one. I would like to thank everyone who made it. We were able to fix some of the problems we had on trail5. Greg and his crew added railing to the one at the top of trail 9 to stop the illegal bypassing. Scott Campbell and his crew worked trail 11 and 12. Grif Shirley worked trail 4 between 5 and 1. We were also able to move around 40 tons of rock for trail stabilization. Upstate Landcruisers and Georgia Cruisers cut rhododendron from trail 8, put up signs and put out seed and fertilizer. Even with everyone scattered all over the area Gunnar and Roger were able things organized and moving along. Currently I’m working on the upper end of trail8, headed to the top of trail 9. Our next work days are August 25th-29th. As always we need EXPERIENCED 5 ton drivers and escort drivers. If you can help out contact Roger. (DSLTOY). Again I’d like to thank everyone who came out and helped. ROB.

The timing sucks on this one, But we'll be working on the top of trail 9 on Sep. 1-3 ( labor day weekend). The trail shouldn't actually be closed. I've got to put the berms and silt traps back in. hopefully I'll only have the trail blocked for a short time.

Right now the trail work is at a stand still while we wait for matierals from the Forest Service. We should have more surge stone after the 1st of October. The weekend of Oct 20-21 we have a work weekend planned to rehab some of the camping areas and also rehab the illegal trails at the top of 9. We'll need a lot of help on this one. anyone that is interested can PM me or DSLTOY for details.

If I get my new XJ done before then I wouldnt mind helping. Are y'all gonna start back allowing camping on Trail 1? We usually drive down and just either sleep in tow rig on the side of the road, down by creek crossing or the wide spot near TN side at the creek.

Looks like we’re about done for this season. We moved the equipment out on the 28th. We’re waiting for the results of the engineering survey. I’d like to thank everyone who came out to help this year, especially my Dad who spent most of the summer living in a camper in my driveway so he could be here for all of the work weekends. I’m trying to build a better contact list for next season. Anyone interested in helping can PM me here or E-Mail me at Rob.Theurer@SFWDA.org with your contact info (e-mail, phone #) and any special skills you have (equipment operator, dump truck driver, etc.). We’re planning on trying to organize the work days as far in advance as possible and have a sign up on the SFWDA Forum. If I can build a database of our volunteers I’ll send out E-Mails of our schedule. ROB

The guy in the 5 Ton is my dad,Roger Theurer (DSLTOY). He's driving one of SFWDA's trucks. That's what he spent most of the summer doing, not bad for a guy pushing 60. All I can say is that anyone who wines about being beaten up in a regular 4 X 4 is a F#$king Wimp. When he's not in the 5 ton he's usually driving a red diesel Landcruiser with a White Trash of Elwood star on the hood (mine's the green one).I'd like to say thanks Dad for all of the help this summer and for constantly kicking me in the butt to keep me going and on track. ROB
