Is there enough flex difference between the frame and body of my 40 to warrant not mounting my tire carrier using both the bumper and body. I want to use the top of the bumper as the main pivot point but it seems that to hold all of the weight of my coolers, 37" tire and 2 jerry cans, I am going to have to also use a swivel from the original tire carrier that mounts to the body.
The carrier is the width of the Cruiser and closest to the pivot point will be the tire with the 2 jerry cans mounted off of it, and furthest from the pivot will be two "shelves" to hold 2 coolers one above the other. My bumper is made out of rectangular tubing.

I think there is enough, but that is just my Cruiser. I am not sure that all FJ-40's have as much frame flex as mine does.
I have a ton of unsprung weight with D60's and 42" tires though.
I have added an extra crossmember to help, but I think I would trash my body if I had something attached to both!
I STILL :emb4: need to tie my cage to my frame and when I do that should get the flex more reasonable.

I wouldn't attach it that way but that's me...While the body is fairly stout your going overboard....check out http://www.landcruiserconnection.com and make dual pivots, one for each side using an old spindle....will hold tons of weight and never bind, I have one that's custom made and stout isn't the word......
I thought about the spindle route but wasn't sure if it or the bumper would hold up to the long cooler/tire carrier. I have seen many that split in the middle and both swing out in opposite directions but I would like it all to be on just one long swing out. My bumper is 2x4 tubing so I figured I could cut a hole top and bottom and wedl in the spindle so that it disperses the weight throughout the bumper. I am just worried about the wieght of the 37" spare.
I know my frame has some flex, but I am stock axle sprung under with 4" Skyjacker lift. I don't think the flex is extreme?

Joey go the spindle route, if I had a camera I would take pictures for you and recessed in the bumper it will hold that weight and more...versus normal bearings or other carriers....I have a 36" and usually sit on the tire and see little to no deflection, I can also swing by it....its beefy......

One of the Cruiser guys up here has large poly bushings for body mounts, you can see a lot of twist between his body and frame.
Mount everything off the rear frame
I wouldn't use the body for anything but holding paint.
After a few years of carrying around a 35" tire on the factory 1970 rack my sheet metal now has a 3" stress crack in it around the top mount.
My Cruiser is from Az. and is in great shape, I couldn't imagine the damage that could be caused to your tub if it had more weight on it.
One thing I forgot, my Cruiser is my daily driver also. If your Cruiser only gets used a few times a year then it would take longer to work harden the sheet metal.
I still haven't got my red star so I can't show you my new rear bumper with a tire rack mounted to it.
I saw a site that had the spindle, sleeve, bearing(s), basically everything that would be needed, but I can't remember what site it was.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
