: Help me ID this front hp44 (ford?)
http://pages.prodigy.net/coolmank/pics/cmksjeep/hpd44/dirty001.jpg
It's supposed to be a Ford F250 front ('78 or so?). Here are the facts; it is a d44, high pinion, driver's side drop, with the driver's side leaf spring pad cast into the housing.
The numbers off the short tube read:
737C4 610010 4R
I haven't been able to find anything on Dana's expert page or Patooyee's site referencing that "610010." I'd like to find out exactly what this thing is just to make component gathering easier and so that I have a starting point from which to judge how much I want to cut it down.

This is dependant on which outers you plan to run. It will be different if you run 8 lug, vs 6lug, vs 5 lug. Keep that in mind. From the pic, it looks to be just what you state- late 70's 3/4 ton p/u hpd44.

Yulp, I should figure that out first shouldn't I. Time to start searchin'.
I'm just a bit confused/concerned as to why that BOM number isn't popping up in the known databases. I don't want to end up with another oddball axle like my TJ d44 rear that uses some really rare pinion seal or some garbage like that.

It is a 77 1/2 open diff 4.09:1 gears. F-250 part-time and full time usage depending on if it had slugs or unlockabel hubs. Half year only BOM #, but all parts are interchangable with '78-'79 D-44.
The '78 axles had 610040 BOM.
FWIW I've found very little on the online Dana BOM website actually show up.
I have the Spicer publication X510-8 DSD. Front and Rear axle kit book.
Good luck,
Eric
p.s. It is not an oddball.
patooyee 06-04-2002, 04:39 PM Unfortunately, my page starts at 1978.5 and goes up. I would love to add before that but my BOM books don't go that low. If anyone had them, I would love to add them to my site!

Alpo, thanks a ton dude!
Might I ask where you got that Dana literature from and if it's possible for anyone to get copies of it?
Patooyee, regardless of your site missing some years, thanks a ton for the info you do have on there.

patooyee 06-04-2002, 05:48 PM I got mine straight from Dana. They paid postage and sent it for free! It's the least they could have done after what I went through to get it, though! It involved days and days of calling around, trying to find the right contacts, etc. I don't know if they do it any more. The company has restructured since I got mine, or something, and the same people dont do the same things anymore. I tried to get literature for older axles, but they basically said, "We already sent you a ton of stuff. Aren't you happy yet?"
So again, I say . . . if someone has the lists for older axles, I would love to put it on my site. I'lm sure we could work out a mutually beneficial deal.

I called several states just to track down info on the Reverse Spiral (High Pinion). Even ran into the "The guy you wanted to talk to retired 3 years ago and the company didn't replace his position do to down-sizing". I was luckly to get some info from them, they just scanned it in and e-mailed it. If your thinking of calling Dana, just plan a couple hours of dead ends.
Alpo, Nice info :cool2:
CMK, could you measure the center of balljoint to center of ball joint? The F250 are about 1" longer than the F100's / F150's, in the passengers side tube.
For those reading a long the Ford Extenda Cab also has this axle! but I don't know if it;s F150 or F250 lenght.
Brandon 06-04-2002, 09:12 PM looks exactly like mine :)

I'm getting 53" across the upper ball joints. Without a second person, I can't get a good reading across the lowers.

cmk Thanks,
My 73 Reverse Spiral measures 52 1/2" across. Now I need to pull the shafts and measure those.
79 & 78 D44RS F250 shafts measure 33" to flang, 35 to U-joint center
79 & 7? F150 shafts measure 32" to flang, 34 to U-joint center
If your cutting this axle down this doesn't matter much.
80 Wag shafts are 31" to flang, 33 to U-joint center
A nice stub shaft is the Ford 80's IFS, saves you about 4-5" In our Pick and pull yard they are everywhere.

E-bay, do a search under 'Dana'. keep a look out for 'Buy it Now' deals. most lit. like this goes for around $40-$60 when all is said and done.
Patooyee;
The catalog I use the most is 270 pages long. If I can get a good way to CHEAPLY copy it without destroying the binding, then I'll see what I can do about getting you one. It covers 1967-1978 for Ford/GM/Dodge/IHC/AMC-Jeep.

patooyee 06-05-2002, 07:12 AM I just need the pages with the bill of material numbers cross referenced witht heir vehicles. Is that 200+ pages?
J. J.
ok, more like 140 if thats all you want, it has info on axle shaft lengths and spline counts too.....
eric
patooyee 06-05-2002, 08:57 PM Yeah, mine does, too.
I don't know how we could do it. I'll PM you.
