my friend's 87 YJ's I-6 engine is on it's last leg. it didn't pass smog and leaks oil, etc.
i was researching a little about swaps and/or reman engines, and it looks like reman engine would be a cheaper way to go. i think we'll keep the carb, so only the engine/exaust/carb will be replaced.
i found these companies that sell reman engines:
http://www.unitedengine.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=UE&Category_Code=AMJ
http://remanufactured-engines.com/20%20AMC%20Jeep.htm
http://www.powerpro2000.com/lb_amc.htm

anyone dealt with these companies, or has any other recomendations?

PS. total swap is not an option, as we have to get it running really fast, so swapping the block seems the way to go.

best bet is to find a local machine shop with a good reputation.
Never liked assembly line remans.

I agree with Johncm. I'd stay away from Remanufactured engines. Find yourself a good rebuild shop and spend the extra money. A friend of mine bought a 350 from Kragen that failed after 10,000 miles, we opened it up and found that two cylinders were bored .030 over and the rest were standard. I don't have any experience with the shops you have listed but most will try to cut corners when they can. That I6 is an easy rebuild if you decide to do it yourself.
