: Building a front cage. How should I attach it to the floor?
jeepps 06-04-2002, 09:35 AM I'm working on building a front add-on cage for our FJ-40. It will be the basic design of 2 L shape pieces on the sides, and 2 horizontal spreader bars.
The only thing I'm not sure about is how to attach the cage to the floor in the front.
Here's my idea. Weld at plate to the end of the tube and bolt it through the floor to another plate.

Here's the basic cage design:

What other ideas do you have? Any pictures of front cages would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Neil
Diesel_Cruiser 06-04-2002, 10:04 AM How else are you going to attach it?? Don't think there is another way, maybe cutting holes in the body and welding the tube directly to the frame, but that seems a bit radical :D
I've attached some pics, first pic is Brian Swearingen's case, check out his sit www.IH8MUD.com lot's of very interesting tech stuff including rollcages there.

Diesel_Cruiser 06-04-2002, 10:09 AM You can also tie the cage to the frame for extra strength, that you will hopefully never need, but if you do need it you'll be glad you tied it to the body.

jeepps 06-04-2002, 10:29 AM Thanks. The one of the red FJ helps a lot.
I did see Brian's cage writeup, but it's a little more than what I'm planning on doing.
I guess my main question is if it's ok to bolt to the floor.
warpdriv 06-04-2002, 10:59 AM Dude, go the extra mile and tie it to your frame. This subject has been the topic of many religous discussions. If you need it, you have it. It would be sad to find out, you should of had it. SAFETY SHOULD NEVER BE SKIMPED ON!:)
One idea that has been talked about is going to the floor to a plate, then comming up from the frame to a plate, and bolting the 2 plate together.
IMHO,
jeepps 06-04-2002, 01:31 PM I like the idea of sandwiching the floor and mounting to the frame with another piece of tube.
How's this look?

Jason M 06-04-2002, 04:20 PM Looks familar,
I'll get pics tonight.
Sloan 06-04-2002, 04:27 PM Bag that stock roll bar.
TxCruzr 06-04-2002, 05:10 PM I agree with warpdriv...spend a few extra bucks and tie it into the frame.
The 3rd & 4th pic that Diesel_Cruiser post are of mine. I have the stock bar mounted behine the main cage for a little added strenght and for the cruiser look. I'll be welding it to the main cage when I get the bar added for my 5pts.

Hey fixxer, thanks for the compliment on Nolen's cage. I only made 1 trail ride with it in my rig before Nolen acquired it. I am still without a cage due to other projects ... building a house
woody 06-05-2002, 05:39 AM I'll get some good shots of mine again tonight/this weekend...it's changed a bit with the seat mounts and the way the front hoop foot mounts on mine is by FAR the best I've seen for foot and pedal clearance. You can see the L shaped bracket in the pic above, but it really doesn't cover it's true mounting without seeing it installed.
There are somethings I don't like about mine, mostly the seat work, but I'm playing with donig a new-lighter cage this summer....have to see how fundage comes along.
jeepps 06-05-2002, 09:01 AM Brian, how many bolts are you using with the L bracket? Do you mount to the frame? Foot/Pedal clearance is very important with my big feet.
Some close up pictures would be great.
FIXXXXAH 06-05-2002, 04:17 PM Rusty-
if i remember correctly, that was your first cage too huh?
Matt:D
rustyb 06-05-2002, 05:47 PM Yeah, it was my first full cage. The only thing that I had done before it was a front cage add on for a 92 wrangler the week before. IMO the hardest part was getting the notches right on the gussets. It took forever to get the notches to the point that I couldnt stick my thumbs through the gaps. Bench grinder caught hell that day. :smokin:

No, I did not wash the truck first.
The L shaped foot sits directly above the factory frame mounting point, with one bolt on either side. The factory mount then has flat/angle welded to it for this bolt to connect thru on the backside.
Potentially, the center hole in the foot could tie straight thru the stock body mount, I've just never added that one in.
woody 06-06-2002, 05:49 AM Oh yeah, I ended up with the seat support tube like that since at the time I had opted to not replace my stock-location fuel tank....I'm now planning a custom rear tank and will then be able to ditch the tube that's in the way. Withtout that there, or having it parallel to the floor and just above the floor, access to the front of the truck is excellent.
I've been meaning to talk with my fab buddy on making this front hoop for resale, but he's got too damn manu other projects in progress, including his 600 horse tube chassis FJ40 for CORR racing...heh heh
