: POR tour - Attica leg

Official date: Tuesday, 25th
Camping: Summers Campground, 8 miles N of Attica on SR-55
Call for reservations - (765) 762-2832
NICE campground - outdoor pool, clean, nice facilities, large open primative area, hookups/sites for motorhomes.

Trail options:
Badlands has a few - Green trail is a stocker/light mod trail, Orange is not bad with one locker, Pink needs one locker and a winch will not hurt.

Troy's offsite property will require a WELL setup rig with two full lockers, 35"+ tires, parts, winch, complete disregard for body panels and glass, and a general disposition to slide, roll, slip, and slam yourself thru everything. This is NOT a bypass area, yer in or your out. I had a guy roll on a "bypass" trail last June, coming around to winch me on my tires. ALL rigs wanting this portion of the run will be checked prior on Tuesday morning, so come prepared.

My personal plan: Arrive Friday evening around 11pm at Summers (MUST arrive by 11pm at night to get in/register for your site) Wheeling on Saturday and Sunday and Monday....Tuesday is the silly day, I'm planning to lead/assist with getting the group thru Troy's trail but will only hit the easy stuff myself. We may run it as well on Sunday.

Trail takeoff: Tuesday morning 9-9:30am at the Badlands.
Estimated time: 6-8 hours
Estimated return to Badlands office: 3-5pm.

I am returning home yet that evening, and will be shooting to be off the trails myself by 3-4pm. I will bet that Troy will run with us, depending on how busy he is at the shop.

Thanks Spaceghost for talking with him....he's been "aware" for a couple months since it's been in a newsletter I send him, but he may not have recalled it. I just haven't had time to contact him personally.

My group thus far: Jim with his Cruiser (345 Intl, granny, coil suspension, 38's), Mike with his Ranger (351, 435, 1/4 ellip rear, 38.5's), me with my Cruiser, and probably a few more. Not sure all are in thru Tuesday or not, but definitely for the weekend.

Thanks Woody for shotgunning this thing. I hope we have a good turnout since this is a great place to wheel whatever you have. I mean, bone stock jeeps, hummers, fullsize trucks to the extremes. As Woody stated there are different levels, and no posers will be drug thru the off site trail!

The orange trail has been a bit muddy, might dry up some but since it's back in the woods under heavy cover, maybe not! The quarry has some fairly new obstacles and they have done some maint on the existing ones. This is a good area for people to hang out and watch. I wouldn't count on too much traffic since it's a weekday.

I have talked to Troy several times about this, and he is aware, but may have let it slip his mind. He intends to run with us on the off site trail along with Todd, Robbie, Brian and whoever else can get away from the grind. Unfortunately most of my buddies are not set up for this so if they make it, it'll be on the other trails.

You are right on about the campground, it is a very nice for a being out in the sticks. They do have a little country store with essentials, and most notable is the block building shower houses. The only thing is they limit the number of sites they sell before they call it sold out. Even though there is room for a bunch more, I think it is 25 sites they call sold out. The rates as of last fall were $14 site. Bring firewood and keep the noise to a low roar after dark.

As of right now I plan to be there this coming Sunday to wheel with Syko (who is also doing the Tour stop), and then again the Saturday before (21st I think) with cruiser clubs from Ohio and then early the Tuesday of the Tour stop. So I will see you (Woody) before hand.

And just to publicly acknowledge defeat (cause I would have dogged him if the results were different), Troy smoked my Powerstroke with his Duramax last Friday. I gotta get a rematch and maybe not light the tires up the first 60 feet!

Is there an extra cost for running the off site trail. Last I heard, it was like $40 just to run this? If I can afford spare front shafts buy then, I'm in. Paragon beat me up, so I have to buy 2 for the long side and 1 for the short.

racinhound,
I plan to get there as close to 9 am as possible, definately by 10. I am coming in from southern Indiana where our club is holding a meeting/run on Saturday.

easyxj,
I'm going out on a limb here and will verify this info, but no additional fee will be charged for this event to access Troy's trail as part of the organized run. I will post back if this is a big fawk up an my part!

There are regular fees that will apply of $15 per day, $20 for 2 days and $5 per passenger. All the details of this are on their site Badlands (http://www.badlandsoffroad.com) but if it's not posted there all occupants must be protected by a roll bar/cage even in the back seats.

I'll probably drive up Tuesday morning. (day of the bb run) It's only a 2-3 hour pull for me. Are you planning on going to the erocc comp?

The trail often referred to as "Troy's Trail" is named Mission Impossible. Access to this trail is by invitation only. For several reasons, it will never be opened to the public nor will people be able to invite themselves. Seems some of the activity here has prompted calls to Badlands asking about the trail.

I am priveledged to have been invited to run this trail and appreciate the reasons for this "invite status". I just spoke to Troy who is going to withhold the "invites" to run Mission Impossible until the people interested get there, and he gets a chance to communicate with the drivers and check the rigs. If we do run it, I got the feeling he will show us the way thru if at all possible.

I am not the "official anything" in regards to this Tour or Badlands, but I do talk with and wheel with Troy so I feel compelled to share what I "think" are his feelings on this. If he calls me and says it's wrong or mistated, I'll retract it immediately.

Now with that said there is plenty of wheeling there so don't let Mission Impossible make or break your plans. The quarry area, Purgatory and several other obstacles/trails are wide open for us to test our nads.

Something else that hasn't been stated about Badlands is the trails are non stop obstacles, holes, hills and stuff. No boring long runs down gravel roads to get to a few spots, like Tellico or Slade.

See ya all there!

To concur with SpaceGhost, the Mission Impossible trail defines tough. I've led one ride thru there, and have been on two others. The ride I led last June resulted in 3 rolls and 3 front axles, all by the first defined obstacle - 4 trucks.

Troy is VERY choosy about who is allowed to run this section, and I suspect he will personally inspect/approve any vehicle who chooses to try this area. I have seen some pretty capable vehicles get turned down in the past, whether his concerns were justified or not doesn't matter since it's a gated area and the only access is with his permission. There is one section where the only way thru is with your winch cable over your hood, thru your upper hoop, and used to pendulum you thru the section. Not doing this results in a multiple side roll - last one I heard to opt for no cable ended upside down in the river....ouch.

That said, Attica kicks ass everywhere else too, and I'm running trails Sat-Sun-Mon-Tues that whole weekend. The park is considered completely open otherwise, and I'm looking forward to some of the new areas that have changed since I was last there. Much of the rock-crawl challenge stuff is in the main park, and Mike and I have rolled plenty of times in there too...heh heh

Looking forward to putting faces/trucks to names that weekend!

I've wheeled everything there except for the expert trail to the right that goes through the pond during high water times, and I've caused myself all kinds of damage there. It's been a few months since I've been there though so things might have changed. I sure would hate to get turned down, cuz this is the main (read: only) reason I'm coming over there. But if Troy doesn't think my junk will make it or I can't drive then it's his call. I'm not an egotistical web wheeler or a hammerhead, so at the least I'll get to meet you guys.

My first trip thru the offsite area included a ZJ on 33-35" tires. Well setup rig. He pretty much took all the easiest stuff, and STILL was by far the slowest in the group, because it took so much spotting to get him thru some areas. Body damage was a given, even with the armor he has on the truck. As sweet as the rig was, I felt bad for him....

My favorite part was winching down a deep/steep-walled ravine while angled/laying on my side in about 2+ feet of mud and having to cut off the 4" diameter tree branch that stuck itself thru the front hoop of my rollcage. (windshield/frame at camp) The guy ahead of me not only winched, but junked a tire and ripped apart his rear linkage. It was assembled enuf to get him back to the road and on a trailer.

Hate to say it, but nothing in the park touches the offsite for stupidity...hehehe...looking forward to seeing ya there!

UPDATE:

Talked with Troy Meyers, Badlands owner, this morning. He is competing the weekend of June 22-23 and isn't sure what truck he'll have available for the ride on the 25th, but he is definitely planning to lead us thru "Troy's Trail". I, unfortunately, am now iffy myself, since I may have to return home on Monday night...hopefully schedules can get straightened out.

NOTE: The property we will be running is NO LONGER owned by the Badlands. Our running of it on the 25th may likely be the only time it will be available, and if Troy were not leading, it wouldn't be available at all.

Things are a GO! :D

Just so no one makes a decision based on the running of Troy's trail. There is plenty of carnage available in the park. I broke another inner axle, and mangled my hood (again) without leaving the quarry! Nice trip up Purgatory put me on my side, fuel injection let me drive forward and out of it. Might just wait until after the tour run to fix it!

Where is he going, I guess I need to call. I was thinking of doing the legends class at Eroccs, only a set of 36" tires away.

You don't know what competition he's doing do you. The only one I know of is ERoCC and is he's going to be there I'd like to get in touch with him, just curious, thanks (you meant in June right?)

ERoCC sounds right....we yakked about SO many things on the phone. He had registered for the event, forgotten to put it on the calendar, and then last week they contacted him to confirm...he'd forgotten! (I'd like to forget about "little" things like that too!) So, he's planning to return to Attica on Monday morning the 24th after the competition.

Troy did make it sound like he will do whatever he can to get anyone interested in attempting Troys Trail to be part of the group.

He was also disappointed yesterday that the 30 truckloads of rock he was supposed to get delivered to the quarry~pond area couldn't get in due to rain....busy building trails for the August ProRock! Should have a couple ready by the 22nd tho....heh heh

BTW: SpaceGhost, are you competing or working that event? Aug 23-25? We are planning on working it....decided to hold on competing until next year. (C might to do the ladies class in 2003 - heh heh) I decided I was too lazy to swap to 35's and relocate my rear springs to meet the requirements....and not in the mood to run with the big dogs!

BTT ~ Update

Well, the missus got her schedule figgered and we will still be around for the Tuesday ride. 9am at the Badlands office - shouldn't be a "line" to enter like the weekends, but don't be late.

We are still shooting for staying at Summers, but are waiting for an opening for a powered site. Arriving about 11pm Fri night. Sat is Orange trail, Sun is Pink and Purgatory, Mon is whatever we want, Tues is the private run.

I'm hard to miss...blue camo Cruiser with 38.5 SX's...hehehe

So is there anyone that isn't running Troy's Trail on Tuesday? I'm not sure if I can get out there on Monday and Tuesday, but one of the days for sure (maybe 1 1/2) but I haven't run out there yet, so I'd like to stay on the Badlands trails.

Or maybe I'd be better off planning to come out on Monday rather than Tuesday. Yeah that's the ticket.

I'd like to see if there is going to be anyone else not doing the special trail.

Gang, I feel like shit right now....not gonna make it. I can't justify 300 miles of one-way driving by myself with no confirmed riders for any day but Tuesday....my buddy junked his tow rig motor....we just got to his place....and we are going up north to get drunk now.....

Hate to say Shit happens...but sometimes it does. I was REALLY lookng forward to it too....

I will be in contact with the Badlands and will post any updates/information on Monday....AFAIK, the ride is still on, Troy was plannning to lead anyways....

SHIT!!!!!
