: 99 Taco SAS, HAVE D44, worth it?
jslamerman 06-04-2002, 12:37 PM I am contemplating the purchase of a 99 Tacoma X cab, v6/auto 4x4, and I just happen to have a drivers side drop, Hi pinion D44 with 4.56s and detroit (never driven on), 64.5 " wide, 6 on 5.5 from (and intended for originally) a J10, already had the knuckles cut and turned and spring pads set up for SOA, with flatop knuckles as well. The J10 project has been scrapped, and I want to buy this, but afraid maybe its a can o worms (specially for mainly a daily driver). I have a 83 Toy on 38s with a 4.3/700r4, that will run someday, so its my trail truck. Advice???? I just dont wanna dump any money on some F#$$N IFS crap, its against my principles. I also have a set of 35 MTRs removed from my 83 when I went o 38 SXs, so I have the tires (and an xtra IFS box as well) What spring width r U taco SAS guys usin, mine is the stock j10 pad width????:D  :D
bigbene 06-04-2002, 01:25 PM I've been running my Tacoma with a Dana 44 under it for about 6 months now and haven't looked back. Rides and handles pretty good all things considered. My only complaint is that I'm running 36" swampers with 4.56 gears on a 4-banger. I wish I would've went with 4.88's so I could accelerate in 5th.
If you've already got a trail rig.... Why would you want to drop the $ on a SFA?

I am building this same axle(out of a J10) but the width is too much. The rear of a taco is roughly 60 in were the J10 44 is almost 65in . I am building a 60 for the rear to compensate for the width of the front. That and I believe the 60 will be stronger. the reason im going full width in the rear is because if I run spacers on the rear(on the shorter taco axle) I will just wear wheel bearings out like every 6 months. I already wear wheel bearings out evey yr now. That and I just want the extra width with strong axles. Hope this helps
ROCKTACO 06-04-2002, 07:27 PM I did a 98, its been about two years now and im pretty satisfied with it.I dont think you will be to wide with that axle, probably just right.I know alot of guys have problems clearing the springs during tight turns.I will admit it is It a money pit,but what isent ? Rides nice and tight ,No rattles,no oil leakes, with cruse, a.c.(you get the picture). There something about a newer vehicle that is ...well just comfertable, plush.
As for ability,I think it works great!but after moving the axle forward about 3.5 inches it is a little long(lota three point turns).
I do have plans to bring the ass end up a few inches.about 8:)
my two cents,hope it helps.
Cb77mello 06-05-2002, 09:12 AM There are about a dozen or so guys that have done the swap and all the one's I have talked to say it rides the same or better! And as far as capable goes your a long WB but you can still wheel it your just doing a few more 3 point turns then most. You could also move the ass end forward!
Try the TTORA board allot of guys over there have allot to say about the SFA swap
Wilson 06-05-2002, 03:22 PM Having the fornt end 4-5" wider thant eh rear, is not a big deal at all, I don't know why so many people are afraid of it or think it's a bad idea. I like it way better, The truck tracks better (all the weight is in the front anyways=more stability). On the trail, if you can get the front end around the corner, the rear trails ighter, so it's not a problem. With my toy rear and spacers, there was 7" of difference between my front and rear ends, with the new 9" there is 4".
