What's a decent winch ??? One not to pricy, but would be able to pull my 89Runner out of a tough spot if needed to ...

If your primary concern is price, M8000 all the way. Slower than my first choices(HS9500-series) but also about $200 cheaper.

General concensus is that Ramsey makes a decent product (on the other hand, the majority of the winches which have broken at the last few Top Truck Challenges have all been Ramsey) so YMMV.

I run a Superwinch X9 (For $625-ish from www.uswinch.com) on my 89 4runner, and would very much like a much faster winch. If I did it all over again, I'd be running either an HS9500 or a Warn 8274.

You can generally pick up an M8000 warn for around 5-600 as long as you're patient.

$499, as far as speed goes, if you nee a winch....you are not going anywhere fast anyway, who cares how fast you winch, consider the slower winchs "crawler geared":rasta: :rasta: :rasta:

Well that's the price range I'm talkin' about now ... $499 :bounce:

Speed is not a factor when winching for me ... just need something to pull me out ...

Thanks SeaBass for the info.

Slow winches suck. I would gladly pay an extra few hunderd for the faster line speed models. The problem comes when you first start to get unstuck and need a little momentum. then you have to stop because you are over running your winch line. I personally depend on my winch way too much to skimp on quality or line speed. I would save up for the Warn HS 95OO.
Buy the best once.

My vote is for the old school Warm 8274. Sweet line speed, lots of room to have a LONG cable, and it's cool to be able to see your winch over the hood of your truck... LOL

Go to www.carparts.com and get a Warn M8000 for $535 delivered. Just don't call anybody and try and get them to match the price because there selling them for less than Warn alllows. There is a code to get 10% off . I can't remember it right now but if you do a search you will find it.

There is a sale on the old style RamseyREP 8000 with the smaller, slower motor for $399. Check the mags - you will see the ads.

You can get a hawse fairlead for about $40 more...

Slow as can be, but it is more than enough winch for what you describe as YOUR intended use.

Mine held up just fine, and I sold it 2 weeks ago only because I picked up a Warn XD9000i from a buddy for $400 :cool2:

I've got the Warn HS9500. I've wheeled with guys who've said they think it's line speed is too fast.

I like it. I think other winche's line speeds are too slow.

I'm with Zags on this one, save your money and the the latest model. It has a larger motor, good line speed, and you'll have a winch you'll be very happy with down the trail.
