: Brake master conversion ideas?

I'm at the stage with rig to start thinking about how to change out the messy old vaccuum brake combo (divorced canister) Does anyone have experience swapping late model GM hardware into an early scout-80? I'm running D44's front and back wrapped with disks so I need a larger fluid res, or so I've read.

I also wanted to know if anyone has sucessfully rebuilt a seized clutch master? The local Napa, Southern auto, and Kragen only sell rebuild kits for the Scout-80. Mine has over time rust/welded itself together, and the aluminum housing doesn't look like it can take much force. Is there a swap-in unit that I might want look into?

P.S.

The engine in my Scout hasn't run in well over ten years, I changed the oil, cap rotor and plugs and it started right up after I dumped some fuel down the nasty dirty carb. I rebuilt the Rochester 1bbl yestarday (all 15 parts) :rasta: and I expect it to behave tonight.

Scouts RULE!

Thanks!

Holy Shiet 62!

You posted the exact two questions I was about to post.....
I swear.....
I just finishing uploading some pics to post & ask about.

I'm not running Dana 44s (Yet!)....
But was wondering if if I do put in a new cylinder, if I should/can just go big in preparation for 44s & discs...

I'm not sure about the clutch either, I'm runing a SB 350 & Muncie 4 Speed..

I'm glad you started this thread....
PS- Let me know how the Rochester works out...

I cannot confirm the information, but I understand that the clutch MC on the Scout's are a common unit available new today. The MC is used in a lot of applications and may be available through one of MFG's that supply parts to the race crowd.

As far as the Brake MC, I'd consider running a Hydro boost unit, much smaller then a vacuum unit. Check Jim Weed (http://www.off-road.com/~jweed) site for more info.

Great link! Thanks.

Is there any magic 304 Power steering setup that I should look into installing, as I need a pump to make this hydraboost system work. I don't plan on actually switching over to P/S until the d44 knuckles are rotated, and my SOA is ready for the 2.5" springs.

Any opinion on jeep/toy weld on spring perches to 86 the stock 1.5" POS IHC springs ?

I have had no luck at all in regard to sourcing a clutch master yet. I have an old chevy (50's) era cyl that may work close enough to the firewall as to not interfere with the Caddy booster.... I'll let everyone know it works.

Cheers,

Close Joe

Stirling units are available new.
for 50-75 apiece, and you still have the parts problems
Get the clutch master to a 80'ish Dodge fullsize. bolts right in, all you need are new lines and a little extension for the shaft.

The stock clutch MC is a “Gerling” unit found in Jeeps and Austin Healy’s to name a few
Bendix Part# 22699 rebuild kit

I don’t recall another app for the slave but they rarely cant be rebuilt...... Bendix part# 22816

Brake master cyl options are endless.

If it were me, I would just throw a SII MC & prop valve. Stops my rig just fine. If your scout originally had the single reservoir cylinder you will need to use the trusty rattail file to hog out the Donor MC about 1/8 wider on each hole. IIRC Corvette used a 4disc MC that had the hose Bosses tapped toward the engine side. I used that setup once many moons ago

AS for the power steering pump what motor ?? do you have

the motor is a 152. I was thinking that the 304 stuff might just bolt on, but not that I'm thinking about it, there is no place to mount it. *DOH* the other head is missing..

Gerling? You mean girling? Is it an intergral resivoir item with a little cap?

I think I know where I can get them. Post a pic and I will see if it is the same or give me the girling PN

Yes, the "stock" clutch master is Girling, hard to find new (much more than $70-$80... try $150-$200+ at the race-car shops).

I do know one guy/80-800 vendor that has a couple (maybe only one) new on his shelf. $70 IIRC, plus shipping from Oregon.

Steven Beals <info@scoutparts.com>

tell him Mark Ashford told you about him.

he's got sources for lots of other 80/800 parts as well, weather-stripping ect. Nice guy from my dealings.

Another option is a Dodge D-50 p/u clutch master. Almost a bolt in. You have to *slightly* oval the mounting holes, and get a Metric->SAE adapter for the hard line. I got the NAPA numbers at home.

Not as "cute" as the all aluminum/metal Girling, this one has a plastic cup, but works just fine. Swap out the rod off your MC for the short one on the new cylinder.

As for the brake master, I *think* its a standard pattern, try one of the guys above sugestions and let me know how it works... I need/want to replace mine soon as well. Not sure how you can set up the brake lights though... the stock light switch is off the MC, not the Petal (well, at least mine is).

For PS, search, we talked it over a month ago. Do-able, but not always easy...

If you give me the girling number and or a pic I will cross reference it with the rover one that sounds exactly as you describe.

I used a clutch mc from a 70's ford courier and it worked fine. When this discussion was brought up earlier it was mentioned to use the old brakes mc the stroke is the same from what I found. Sinces you are removing it anyway you can save some money and the rebuild kits are easier to get.

Friends... :flipoff2:

I just made an awesome discovery. It turns out that an 88 Jeep Cherokee clutch master is a *DIRECT* bolt in replacement for the girling aluminum unit that comes in the 60-62 Scout.

Just wanted to share this with IH community.
