Refurbished or new, how hard would it be to find a new motor and drop it in there. Would it be worth looking for a 98 and later engine or could i drop a domestic in there. The guy says 1800 for a used one but i'm sure that is pretty hi.
here it is (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1834103211)
I know he doesn't give much info and there are a ton of other things that probably need addressing, but i'm just interested in the motor issues.

I had no trouble selling my 4.0 (outta my 97 D90) for more than $1800. When I polled some guys in the industry (LR parts, shops), they all agreed that they would charge a customer over $2000 for a good 4.0. Not sure about the 3.9 though. I wonder what the reserve on that Disco is?

there have been several people who have dropped omestic engines into lr vehicles couple that come to mind are Mike Slade and TeriAnn Wakeman. She even has a full website on the conversion. If memory serves me right she dropped a 383 into a series III. I am pretty sure that Mike and Timm Cooper have devised somesort of system to drop domestic engines into LRs. Of course going with the LR engine would be simplier but I am guessing that it probably wouldn't cost too much more to put in a domestic engine although I don't have exact figures have to talk to Mike about that. Also another problem you might run into with a domestic is having too much power. Start breaking other things that you might not want to. Kind fo interresting that the info says its a stick not too many of those around. Dropping in a 4.0 would be nearly as easy as putting in a 3.9 except for the OBII stuff that goes on all the 4.0, but that is both a blessing and a curse. Easier to diagnose electrical problems (inherrent in LR it seems) but more electrics to have problems with. Here's the link to TeriAnn's site http://www.overlander.net

why in gods name would you ever even consider retrofitting OBD II to a 3.9 disco!

You just transfer the 3.9 EFI crap onto the 4.0 block. Need a new cam (which makes any long block less of a good idea) but everything else bolts on.

Personall that little disco there screams TDi conversion. The R380 is probably junk at 100k so get yourself a 300TDi/R380 out of a UK disco and be like ECR only much cheaper.

The idea of the tdi sounds pretty good. Too bad some idiots are bidding it up high in the first couple days.
thanks for all the replies, hopefully i will be coming back with more q's if i get it

1800 for a used motor with 40K or so miles would be pretty reasonable. I've sold 2 3.9s with around 40K on them for 2000 each. If you want to stay with petrol a 4.2 from a LWB would be an easy bolt in and have nice power. Otherwise a Tdi would be a good idea but you're talking a lot of money to do it.

here in OZ Holden and Chev engines are a popular conversion
although Modified 4x4 insurance especcialy if fitted with bigger than 5ltr engine is getting hard to find.

An other conversion that has been popular over the Years is the Leyland P76 4.4 engine it's very similar to the Rover and many parts are interchangeable.

A friend of mine has just fitted Disco EFI to one of these Leylands and looks like having more horsepower and torque than a 4.6 Rover!

I seem to remember advance adapters making a 4.3 vortec adapter. I know of one that was done on the east coast. More HP but similar torque.

If I remember the ecu placement was the problem in that conversion.

Here's a motor from the yard I usually source.

I got a used 3.9 for a swap into our project Rangie from these guys: http://www.britishrecycling.com and it runs great! They'll tell you what they have in stock and they can ship nationwide. I had it shipped to my friend's shop where we did the swap and it is now in a happy home running great!

My buddy has a 1995 LWB 4.0 engine for sale through www.roverclubhouse.com ( Ryan's truck) you can email the clubhouse for what I am sure will be a great price. They also have the efi crap you might need.

Of course this is all used stuff but I am a sloppy seconds kind of guy and if $$ is an issue this is an option.
