Cougar67 06-14-2007, 07:03 PM WTF! Please tell me those aren't 53's on a dana 44.
crzyukon 06-14-2007, 07:50 PM no 46's i am gonna run it till it shits out then go bigger pry 60 up front also!
gr8pumkin 06-14-2007, 09:09 PM A guy on my local club just did a 4l60 rebuild and it only lasted about three months with his 37's. He's now swapping in a 4l80. If I was in your shoes, I would at least put an 80 in. Your going to buy a 60 soon, mabey after your first trip. And because of that fact your most likely like us and don't have a couple thousand laying around to waist on another tranny rebuild and axle swap.
florida4x4 06-14-2007, 09:27 PM 5.38 is not enough gear and will over stress the 4l60. you need rocks.
smalltowncowboy 06-14-2007, 10:51 PM you traded for that? what did you trade?
crzyukon 06-14-2007, 10:56 PM My 86 b2000 i built it from the ground up bagged 350 suicide doors totally shaved custom paint ect.

avery4jc 06-14-2007, 11:45 PM yeah w/o a doubt you're going to want to start doing some research on putting rockwells in...
that...or just drop it down a little...you could sell those wheels/tires and suspension parts and have some cash to do a more reasonable lift and get matching gears along with new wheels and tires....just a thought.
smurison14 06-15-2007, 12:39 AM Have you had it in the dirt? A dana 44 would be hard to make live under 39, i have no clue why it is still alive, look into unimog axle swaps as well, and lowering your yukon a few feet.
gr8pumkin 06-15-2007, 12:43 AM Lowering her a bit might not be such a bad idea. But the main question is what are you going to do with the yukon? Mud, trails, mall queen... If its not going to see offroad and only highway why mess with it. Now if you want an all around wheeler I would lower it sell the setup and get 40's and a dana 60 and be done.
DriveTime 06-15-2007, 01:15 AM Pretty clear to me that it is a mall crawler. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but let's be honest. If you aren't going to lower it, which I doubt you will, upgrade the trans. Look into a built 4l80, or even a TH400 with some sort of overdrive.
crzyukon 06-15-2007, 03:01 PM i really want to do a lot of mudding i am new at this and need some insight. i do all of my work my self i just did the ring and pinion on the 60 cause it went out 1st time it was pretty easy. i have been looking into rockwells can i make the 8 lug wheels fit ont those axles and is that a lot of work puting them in. also how long will the 60&44 last mudding?
Joshinator 06-15-2007, 03:37 PM About as long as it took you to type that.... maybe.

It's much easier to make Rockwells work on a street driven rig now compared to when I built my truck. You will need some money to do it though. If all you are going to do is mall crawl and mud I would build a 60 front and a 14 bolt rear.
Rockwells are meant to be cheap, heavy duty axles. You can throw a lot of money into them, but it will be easier and probably cheaper to build a set of 1 tons for what you want to do, IMO.

x2...thats the best plan imo even if you are just "mall crawling"...even on the street I'd be afraid of that d44 up front.
At least with a d60 front you'd be able to have some peace of mind as well as get matching gearing for your rear end. I don't think they make 5.38's for a d44 to match your 5.38 geared rear end and even if they did the pinion would be so small it would be worthless...
99HoE 06-15-2007, 11:37 PM Ive seen a few guys swap in 4l80's but it sounds like a pain because of the reprogramming and CPU crap. I know mines gonna blow up eventually so i was thinking about this one.

avery4jc 06-16-2007, 10:17 AM buying online is nice, especially because there are a couple companies that have very good reputations but at the same time you might have a local shop that could do everything you're wanting...
I blew the 1st gen 700r4 in my '85 K10 and after looking all over the internet I found a local shop that didn't mind working on lifted trucks...he built the same exact tranny that I was looking at for the same price as everyone online and it has a 12 month/ 12,000 mile warranty even though I'm daily driving with those super heavy 38.5's...
Just another option...sometimes its nice going local.
