hope you guys will help an old eb guy...Helping my 14yr old son modify his yj. we've got a 91'4.3 ready and have a cheap 700r4 2wd . Does it have to be 4wd or can we change its output shaft. the write ups on the Novak and advance site clouds the issue.

All you need to do is install a 4WD output shaft and remove the tail housing. The case isn't quite as beefy, but it works.

just a suggestion...if you are going to take that trans apart, replace the input shaft/clutch housing with a aftermarket one. I have shattered three factory ones in a year.

The above replies imply that it's a simple job. It's not. You need to completely dismantle the transmission to change the output shaft. The aftermarket shafts available for this are a little pricey. I pulled a 4wd TH700R4 from the local u-pull-it for $50. I'd suggest that route unless you have some sentimental attachment to this particular 2wd tranny. It's much less trouble and you'd be up and running in a day. The 2wd tranny is worth about $20 so you really aren't loosing anything to throw it away and get the right one. If you go shopping at the junkyard, look for one with a large "K" cast into the top right side of the case.

I paid $25 to have my output shaft put it in, but after watching it be performed, it doesn't look too difficult if you had the tools. I bought my output shaft off ebay for about $40-$50 The only advantage to getting the 4WD version is the beefier case. If you know that the condition of the 2WD tranny is good, I would keep it. If you're not sure - you could do as AERO said and scavage for a 4wd unit.

I was under the impression that the 2wd output could simply be cut down to fit?

I was under the impression that the 2wd output could simply be cut down to fit? I was wondering this also. idont have one of each to compare. I'll probably look for a 4wd to be sure.

slightly off topic, but here is a link to my build...started with a new yj frame, a 91 s10 blazer, and went from there...

rebuilt the motor and bored it over etc.
if you need anything else, shoot me a pm on jeepforum, i forget to check over here sometimes...
as far as the tranny's go, if you have the 27 spline output, you'd just have to get the lengh right for the (assumed) 231c to bolt upto it. think i have an old adapter around somewhere too....
IMO you'd be better off getting the 4wd tranny from an s10....could probably get the tranny and the 231 c for real cheap, and a lot less headache!!
