i'm looking for a cheap bike or car to use for the summer and have just found a 93 Suzuki Katana 600 for about $1600. It seems to be in pretty good shape although has one nick where it fell in the dude's driveway. Is this a good bike? I'm a relatively new rider, is this a bad choice? How much is this thing worth?

Thanks a lot,
Steve

My first street bike was a 92 Katana 600. For me, it was a nice bike for the first two weeks & then I wanted something faster.

I only kept the bike for a year or so, but in that time I didn't have any problems with it. I guess for basic riding, it would be a good bike. I haven't priced bikes in a long time so I don't really know if it is a good price or not.

Katanas are pretty reliable bikes from what I understand. You need to find out the status of the title and how many miles it has. Ask if it has been wrecked. Also go here www.sportbikes.net they can tell you more than I can. I hope to be getting a bike in a month or so:D

They are very good bikes.... How many mikes are on it? If it has alot 30k+ make SURE the valves are still good, (take it to a shop)

If you do get a bike, please take a rider education class;) Because were going to think your an E-dee-it if you didn't and then you crash and die. Then all motorcyclists look bad.

They are nice bikes too. I would probably buy that before I would buy a Katana.

I think the Katana has more of an up-right riding position while the FZR will have you hunched over......

Have the valves check/adjusted before you buy that bike FOR SURE! If its been well maintained, that bike can go for another 40k ;)

edit: Good to hear you took a class

I had a 97 katana 750. I was a good little bike. The only problem I had with it was somtimes while shifting to 2nd it would go into neutral. It wasnt very comfortable for long hauls(hard on the knees) but it was good in the city.

Noone I ride with is a fan of Can of Tunas. Ive personally never ridden what or looked at one very closely. As far as comparing it to the FZR, i think the FZR kicks its ass. I have a 94 FZR and love it, but im out growing it as far as power goes. I bought my FZR for only $1500. So im sure you could find a better bike somewhere.

Sounds like an OK deal, check out http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.bz?kbb&&868&zip_mc;2139 In my opinion, 27,000 is starting to get a lot of miles for a Japanese (SP?) street bike. Having said that I recently picked up a 92 Katana 600 for a reasonable price of $1000 with 19,000+ true miles & a salvage title. I then put 2 new tires, brake pads, battery and a few other ameneties for a fairly low cost of under $500. It may or may not turn out to be a good deal. I figure I got a good deal if I want to ride for a while, but not for resale. Plan on putting 15,000+ miles on the bike with minimal work, or in other words, ride the bike into the ground with minimal $ over the next few years.
