If you don't like it and want to retain the original offset 44, you do have the option of building it. A 10 or 19 spline axle can be upgraded to a stronger 30 spline by swapping in some 30 spline axles and carrier gears. You can also convert to full-float, but that can get a pricey (Warn kit). They make 19 and 30 spline kits. If you swap in a 30 spine detroit, you can order the 30 spline axle kit. It'd probably be pretty strong for a 44 at that point. Full float kit deletes the axles shims on the one side (if those are the shims you're referring to).

You might check www.forumco.com/sparky for specific info on the early CJ's.

edit: somewhere around 70, 71, 72, they swiched from the tapered 19 spline axle to a 30 spline flanged axle. Not sure if the flanged axles kept the shim pack.

I think the old Postal jeep (the DJ) some years had a narrow track offset D44 with flanged axles.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, that is the thing..... i dont want to spend much of it at all. I am thinking of getting a ford 9" for $50 and making it offset (cutting one side), and just buy the R&P and weld the spiders up, thanx for the info, i will look into the earlyu 70's Jeeps and Postal Jeeps and see what i can find:)

Some wagoneers had offset 44's. Not sure about the 1 piece axles though.

There was only one year that they built an offset CJ D44 with 30 spline one piece axles. 1970. You can retrofit them with kits. The postal jeeps are not offset like a cj is, they have the pinion exactly centered which makes the shafts slightly different length.

Makes sense because the DJs were 2wd.

And if you want to convert the older axles to 30 spline, I believe you also need the 30 spline carrier. (No idea why, just seen them sold this way)

I thought that they were available in '71 as well:confused: All I know is that I have a 30 spliner in my 3b:flipoff2:

Could be, I'm going from memory - They aren't real common. Looking at Jeeptech, it appears that they were 30 spline in mid 70 and all of 71

And yes, the carrier is different for 30 spline axles. The 10/19 spline carrier has a smaller hole that the 30 spline axles don't fit through.

My '69 CJ5 parts Jeep (the one I got most of my short-nose front clip from) has a 30 spline flanged Dana 44, offset, with 4.27 gears and a Trac-Loc, it's in Northern Michigan, but if you're desperate, you can have it shipped for way more than I want for it (I'm cheap, UPS is not). Or come up to Alpena, MI and we'll hit some trails.

My wagoneer has an offset dana 44 rear with one piece axles, 3.31 gears though... the bolt pattern is 5 on 5.5 also.. '73 has the same thing, not sure about earlier models '74 and later also have offset pumpkins behind the q-trac, but they are all 6 lug

That Wagoneer axle should be about 58" to 60" from wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange, the one from my CJ is an old narrow track, around 51"

Hey 4bangler, what do you want for that offset rear?

eatons from early 70's 3/4 ton chevy's can be turned around and run offset then you have an offset axle as strong or stonger than a 14 bolt, but you'll either need to go to 8 lug or do some switchin to get 5 lug.
