I'm thinking about starting a tow rig project using atleast the body from my '87 1/2 ton chevy, I might pick up a 4x4 3/4 ton frame/axles to swap under the 2x. The tbi motor in the '87 is probably tired and i'm kicking around the idea of picking up a '94-'96 caprice/roadmaster for the LT1 and maybe 4L60E. Anyone have a LT1/ 4L60E in their tow rig? How does it pull, what kind of gas mileage do you get empty/ towing how much weight? I'm thinking this might be an option for a cheap fulie 350 with decent power.

Save your money, sell your 1/2 ton, get an early 90's 3/4 ton tow rig as it seems you want to save some coin. You're going to have way more money into swapping shit around and finding stuff than if you just got something that would do the job to begin with.

hit the junkyards and swap a 24V ISB Cummins into an 80s Chevy truck. Everyone swaps the 12v because there is less wires but the 24v wouldn't be very difficult either. Box the front of the frame first.

Anyone actually have one in a tow rig? The 1/2 ton was free, I think I have a line on a free 4x4 3/4 ton, a little back yard shopping should find me an LT1 for not a ton of $$, some parts from my buddy's chevy collection for a couple cases of beer, a grand or so at the parts store for all the little junk, a ton of hours in the shop and I'd have a unique tow rig for not a lot of $$. I'd also like to build a truck to have something a little different.

I would think it would tow as good as any 350, fair to midland. Do it and let US know.:flipoff2:

I wouldn't do it.. It will not tow very well compared to a diesel. I would look for a used early 90's dodge truck with a Cummins.
