I bought one of the big grease guns from Auto Zone with the trigger handel, all chrome (only finish) and holds a 14oz tube. Asking because now both guns don't work for some reason. Both have new tubes. I think its just some simple I'm overlooking.
Thing is, I can't get it to push any grease out at all, right out of the box. I always used my dad's, needed one to put in the jeep. here is what I did when I got it...
- Detached the tube.
- Pulled back the rod till it locked
- took cap off top of 14oz grease tube
- put grease tube in gun tube, opened the pop can like top on it
- screwed grease gun tube back on gun itself
- pushed the rod on the tube all the way in as far as I could (is this where I messed up?)
Nothing. No directions either.
Prettty sure this is the one I have.

i have always had this when i change tube aswell. it takes awhile but just keep pumping, it will flow someday. i dont know if its that the spring cant push the new grease very well or buy opening the tube it loses prime somehow but it will work after awhile.

I pulled the bleed off crap off and it started pouring out of that hole, almost an entire 14oz greaze tube and I couldn't hold my finger over it hard enough to keep it from coming out. :shaking:
So I know its making pressure. I can pull the hose off and it wont do shit. This thing is dumb.

Is something stuck in the valve assembly? Can you take the pump valve apart and see the parts, or is it cast together?

sometimes they get air locked. try unscrewing the cap a little and pumping a few, should start working.... good luck

The rod will pull all the way out and turn to lock into the plunger. Then you can hold the gun with the handle end of the rod pushing on something while you pump. This esentialy applies additional pressure to the plunger to push the air out of the gun. It also, in stubborn cases, can help to take the female zerk fitting off to let the air pass through easier. Cold weather can make it harder to get the gun primed also. So, Just pull the rod out, turn it to engage it into the plunger, apply pressure to the rod to push the plunger while pumping and you will have your problem solved.

Heres a couple of tips from using these things every day :shaking:
Don't ever waste your money on the expensive ones I've not seen any worthwhile improvements in there ability
don't change cartridges when they are cold.... warm em up infront of the heater if it cold it'll clear the air lock faster
when I finish a catridge don't bother trying to suck the very last bit out of the tube all it will do is make the airlock worse on the new catridge
Now for the helpfull tips
if you can't beat the airlock, hold the base of the gun (plunger end) and swing it real hard in a big arc.... just make certain you don't clip the end of the gun on anything :mad3:
you can push the bearing seal on the "air vent" (its not really a vent it for those dumb enough to use bulk grease you use this to connect to a bulk drum to fill up the gun) sometimes this will help
The one that helps the most undo the top 2-3 turns and keep pumping (donn't undo it all the way!!) this will create a little bit of vacum to pull the grease up and then as you pump screw it back down
Now for the best tip.... different catridges and types of grease are worse at this... next time you see a contractor pay attention to what brand he is using, if he's like me he's tryied a few and found one that works
and for the books I use Fuchs LX, its cheap and not to bad for airlocks
Cheers

Ahhh ok. Mine has a fancy little air bleed off button. Guess I'll clean it out and try that How much PSI do you need to run a small grease gun for an air compressor?
When I get off work I do it.

its all i ever do. when i screw the top on, twist it on a couple turns, and then pump the handle till it comes out. usually takes 5 or 6 pumps and its flowing. screw lid on the rest of the way

I bought the same gun, had the same problem. What ended up working for me was taking some grease on my finger and pushing it into the inlet hole inside the cap. This got it primed and it started pushing grease after a few more pumps.

just un screw the pump head from the tube a bit and pump it, you probaly have it air bound. some guns have a bleed valve you push on the top. i run through about 2 tubes of grease a week at work and usualy have some kind of problem with at least one of my 3 grease guns. there a pain in the ass but needed.
