Ok, folks this is a big one. Looks like there's plenty of support to pursue this idea of a volunteer trail patrol. Use this thread to talk just about that. We're going to develop a plan and try to put something in place very soon (before this summer).

We have examples of this working quite well. One comes to mind from the Pac. Northwest 4WDA. This club does it and it's great. Very supported by the USFS and the sheriff. We can do it.

Volunteers get training (short session on what and what not to do, how to use the radio, etc.) Door signs, vests, etc. are part of the deal, but we can tailor it to our needs.

Let's kick it around in detail and get some commitments from folks to help organize it, be in it, or make political contacts for us.

By the way, I'll be wheeling quite a bit for the next couple weeks, so if I don't respond, that's why. Keep the discussion going.

Idea: In addition to training by NH Fish and Game, the Northeast Assoc of 4WD clubs Saftey Patrols also purchased and carry along with them small Haz-Mat spill kits. I believe the kits are around $100 and a little bigger than a rolled-up sleeping bag. They are good for containing oil and other spills that might happen.

Someone may want to contact FATRAC www.fatrac.org , they are a group of mountain bikers that help patrol trails.
They may be helpful as well.

The more we kick this around and get folks interested and knowing it's going on, the better. Also, I believe the more we spread it around that folks are going to be doing this, the less violations we'll see.

NOHVCC just sent me a package about the USFS Host Program/Volunteer Trail Patrol program that the San Bernadino NF is doing. There's even a USFS ORV Safety Patrol Code of Conduct package with training material and suggestions for handling trail situations. In other words, we've got the framework to do this if we want to. We just need to get the Eldoroado National Forest in the loop and DO IT.
