One option is to rent a gas operated pump (like firefighters use or water truck drivers) to pump out the water and disperse it properly. Then see what you can do to make it more passable.
It would dry out naturally given a little assistance with a good pump out.

FOTR would cover the cost of the pump rental if needed. Just let me know.

We do NOT want to put muddy water in or near a creek. But around Walker, we should be able to disperse it naturally through the forest duff (stuff on the ground). :)

The only place that will need a pump for the water would be the downed tree area but that has fresh water flowing into it all the time. Once the trees are moved the water level will drop about 8-10"

I just want to make sure we have options that make the work easier. If we use surrounding material (rocks), we cannot be seen going off the trail to get them. That means backbreaking work and wheelbarrows, along with jeep trailers.

We moved hundreds of tons of rock on the Placer Co. side to do those waterbars/rolling dips. But we had backhoes, loaders, and utility trailers. OUCH.

We don't want to cut any live trees or disturb areas that are undisbturbed now, or the USFS will not be our friends. Know what I mean?

I fully understand what you are saying. I cant see where anytime during this project we will need to get off the trail or cut any trees what so ever. The backfilling with rocks wont be that bad because very nearby there are plenty of rocks on the trail. The water area will be tough because of the depth of the water and the size of the logs. We can do it though.

Hi Guys

I just went through that thread on the pirates' site, and I volunteer to check out the place at least 10 days before the june 29th week end. I am an Engineer, and that is exactly up my aley, so I could give us directions as to what the best course of action is. I also have to agree with Dan, I was going to suggest the same thing, we don't need trucks or trailers to get the rock there, any jeep no matter how small it is can haul a few rocks, mine is a Chevy full size so I can bring more, so if evryone pitches in we can do it.

Will let you know soon of my humble opinion, probably this week end, or at the latest next week end.

I will plan on the 29th and have word out to the club that the 29th will be a work weekend but let me know if and or what we can do on the 15th. If we want to only work on the work weekend and not before then OK but I would like to do something when I am up there on this trip if it is a good idea.

The greenies are trying to shut us down. We need to change public opinion on what we are doing. As soon as we are certain of our plans and we have all of the permissions, we should contact local news agencies. A bunch of guys volunteering time, money, blood and sweat to keep a balance looks real good for us. Perhaps call a few news channels, a newspaper or two, etc? Can't hurt!!!

QUESTION: Is where this spot at driveable by a semi stock 4x4 toy truck? I mean I have no lockers yet and it's only lifted 3" so far. So if I'm able to get to the work site I'd be more than happy to go up and help. I've never been on this trail, I have read and heard alot about it and I guess before I start making my yearly trips up there and wheeling it'd feel good to know that I've helped maintain it before hand. I live in the Phoenix Metro area so if anyone from here is going up maybe I could tag along and drive up behind ya'll or something. I've seen some dates tossed around, any set date yet? Please let me know, I bet I could even get a few guys to go with and lend a helping hand.

Probably best that you just drive to the trail head and walk/hitch a ride in. We will probably just go up Friday night and camp at loon. Getting to the bottom of walkers at 8am from my house is gonna be tough. :D That means that Scout Dude gets less beauty sleep and we all know that he needs his beauty sleep. :D

Something else we need to consider- there will be many other users on the trail that day. We need to be considerate and curtious and make sure we don't block the trail at any time. There are clubs that have runs planned for that weekend.

OK I'll meet you guys _____________________ just before 7am on sat. (fill in the blank) I can make it to ellis in 1hr20min, towing from home... a couple rigs can stay at ellis (pond) and some could go on to the next "target" area. Or we could tagteam each area and get it done sooner.

we should do fine on blocking the trail. The log situation will be a simple hook up a rig to a choker and start yanking logs out. The mud pits wont be bad because people will have to sit for a few minutes while we fill. After that they will flow through much faster than one rig at a time sitting there making the hole bigger. We just have to be a caltrans crew for a day (I want to be the guy leaning on the shovel :D )

I haven't been up this year but I think I know the spots where this happens.

Can *we* put a winch vehicle just past each pit and winch rigs through while we are working on it?

If a group goes through, only the first rig should need to be winched, and then each following rig in the group could be strapped by the person in front of them.

This would keep all the traffic on the trail and off the bypasses.

Dan- I'm sure we could do that if it becomes necessary but I don't think it will come to that. If we first attack the wall at the end of each pit, the rigs will be able to pass without much trouble. It's a good thought and something we should consider if we notice ANY backup.

Mark ?? Should others be bringing rock in whenever? I've got a group of ten rigs on the 14th, if they each bring 2 bowling ball sized rocks on the way in and 2 more on their way back out then thats a nice pile. Where do you want it?

My YJ has a 10k lbs winch and I will gladly drag someones sorry arse up and out of the way. Sounds good that the next vehicle in their group can pull the next rig up if needed.
