: PTO winch
Stupid frnch jackasS 06-05-2002, 11:12 AM Hi all,
I may have the oppotunity to get a complete PTO winch from a BJ42 (H55F) for really cheap (well.... free :D).
My questions are (did a serach btw :flipoff2:)
1-is it worth getting it ?
It is officially rated at 4500lbs, versus 9000 for most electrics.
Will my PTO outperform the elctric winches (performance ratings are often fantasy I understood) or will this be useless for getting myself out of sticky mud or on top of mean rocks...
Any input on this ?
(Yeah I know a 3000cc powered winch will not overheat then burn :smokin: !)
2-shaft length ?
my BJ40 has an H41, which is 3" shorter than the H55F the BJ42 the winch will come from has. Will I have to lengthen that shaft, or is there a slip yoke sumwhere ? Or will it work just as is ?
(well, the BJ42 MIGHT be 4sp, which would be even easier...
Thanks,
Bye,
rick d 06-05-2002, 03:41 PM Ratings are 1,800kg mainly for shear pin (source, 1995 and 1997 J7 owners manual). Electric winch is way to go. PTO's (yes, I have one) are a novelty. I think coolness is unsurpassed for a OEM PTO, but in reality an 8274 is light years better for a 40 series.
Drivelines: In this country, split case PTO's are rare and the 3 piece drivelines are even rarer. The two piece (have one here) are for 1979 and later 4sp trannies (the short ones). The 3 piece are only for H55 5 speed. Both use frame mounted supports (unlike the common US 3sp style), the front bracket is same for both while the rear is h55 only. I'd really hate to see you cut the 3 piece. You really don't want a 5 speed H55 in your truck?? Or, you really don't want to trade the 3 piece for my 2 piece? (; ) )

these things can pull all day, get a few spare shear pins, my cousin has one on his turbo HJ47, a winch witih over 100 horsepower, but eriosuly, my electriuc is good in comeptition but if we are pulling a few cars in a row, and using lots of cable and generally mucking about we use that
the 5 speed will be longer....and the sahft needs to be shortened, we have thje 4 speed shafts here and it was not hard to lengthen them for when we put a 5 speed in
it is good for what you want (pulling out of bogholes) just id hate to be climbing out into the mud
rabid 06-06-2002, 05:28 AM I have seen far more electrics fail (stall) pulling than shear pins break. I have only seen one pin break.
Actually 3 or the 5 or so guys I run with have PTO's, and all but one of them had electrics to begin with. The PTO will pull all day without taxing anything electrical, and is just stronger. I just sold my ramsey pro plus 9000 (which had failed twice on the last trail run it was on) in order to put in a PTO. The electric winch is nice for quick use, or easy pulls, but the PTO is far more reliable.
There is a reason why most industrial, and most big tow trucks and the like use them. They work.
Just my opinion.
Stupid frnch jackasS 06-06-2002, 01:13 PM OK guys, thanks for your replies.
If I had money for a winch, I'd try to sourve a used 8274 for price, ease of installation and use issues..., but since this PTO would be for free, I could afford something more bulletproof and professionnal. It's an even greater value for money BTW.
I hope the deal works my way...
Thanks,
Cruiser Ken 06-06-2002, 06:41 PM For you stateside guys with either a long H42 (late FJ60 or 62) or H55F, I have the 3 piece driveshaft, PTO, winch and PTO gear for the split case still for sale. $800, will not ship.

sort of what i was trying to say!!
BUT we all run electric winches in competition, i love the PTO, and on my new cruiser itll be PTO, just on my comp truck i have the electric for line pull speed, in case of emergencies, and because everyone else uses 8274 warn winches :flipoff2:
parts are easy and cheap, even though you rarely have parts failures on the PTOs!!
rabid 06-07-2002, 05:49 AM I totally agree with that. The PTO would be way too slow for competition. I have a full PTO set up waiting on the shop floor, but may have to sell it to buy a house. I am doing everything I can not to, since I already sold my crappy electric!
