: Torque converter install problem

So, I got my rebuilt ZF-22 back from the shop, complete with a shiny new torque converter.
I as I might, I can't get the torque converter to seat properly in the bellhousing. Rave says it should be 50mm from the flexplate boss on the Torque converter to the belhousing mating face. I know about not forcing it and crushing the tranny pump, but it seems like it's hanging up before the pump engages anyway.
Is there a trick to seating the torque converter? Yes, I searched and yes, it appears to be the right torque converter.
Cheers,
Andy

is the trans in the truck? sometimes it just takes some turning to get the TC to seat on the input shaft. i know that i had that issue. mine was not installed when i went to install the TC so we literally up-ended it and use the weight of the TC to get it to seat as we spun it on the input shaft. then, we had to be real careful not to let it slip off. that happens to me sometimes :D

anyhoo apparently LR has a tool that fits over the bellhousing opening to keep the TC from sliding back out; i didn't have that so i just cussed a lot. it will go back on. good luck.

The trans is under, but not in, the truck. I'll have to pull it out and stand it up on end I guess. On further inspection, it seems that there is a portion of the torque converter deep insde that moves slightly and slips out of alignment when the converter is held on it's side to slide it onto the mainshaft.
Many thanks for the tip. I'll let you know how it goes.

It's not so much a tool as a shipping block. When the trannys arrive, there is a block of steel that holds the torque converter up against the pump while in transit. While it is helpful, I don't think it would work real well when installing as it would get in the way. That said, however, it is real handy to have one to keep things where they belong until you are right at the moment of truth.

Fixed it. It seems that the new torque converter was tight on the input shaft splines. I had to stand the trans on end and use a rubber mallet to get the TC to seat properly. Anyway, the trans bolted up OK with about a 5mm gap between the TC and flexplate after the housing mating faces touched.
Tomorrow....the transfer case.

If you had to drive it on, something was likely wrong. I sure hope you didn't wipe out the pump drive thingies.

X2,...the pump seal is very touchy...if you were "hard" on it, you'll be pulling that trans again to replace a $ 3.85 seal....

uh yeah, that's what i mean :D . i forgot that it isn't a tool per se since i got mine from a remanufacturer and it didn't have anything handy like that.

i'm glad you were able to get it on. hopefully you'll be leak free.

Thanks for the concern about the "pump drive thingies" PT. I was careful to line up the TC and the thingies before using the mallet. I didn't hit it very hard.... more of a tap than a hard blow.
Yesterday I finished the install. I went for a test drive and all seems well, shifting smoothly and fluid is circulating as evidenced by the trans cooler pipes becoming warm.

On another note, will you be at the National Rally in Colorado? I'd like to say hi in person sometime.

Cheers,
Andy

I thought you guys all knew that this year was not likely to be a good one for me making it to the rallye.

After moving and re-opening the shop, we're both beat and I don't even want to think about the engine in the Disco.

Maybe next year, maybe.
