: Gone Propane

The Edelbrock Performer couldn't handle the angles anymore. The last straw was stalling going downhill.

Dual-fuel from gotpropane.com (http://www.gotpropane.com) seems good on the trail after a 3 day weekend run (http://ec4wda.org/LIOR/2007trails/06/06_index.html). No hiccups at all.

This is my 1st propane install. If you see any problems with it let me know. Like you need an invitation...

at left - propane: push handle in, flip toggle up
gasoline: pull handle, toggle down
anti-theft: toggle in center

The handle controls a flapper under the mixer that lets in extra air for gasoline mode. The toggle controls the gasoline & propane shut-off solenoids. I wired a relay for the fuel pump in too.

33# / 8 gal. tank. Red box is a protector & mounting for the bulkhead fitting & pop-off valve. If it does let go it will vent into the air.

http://www.webnetixs.com/4x4/Propane/propane%20015.jpg
The bulkhead is at top left, the nylon(?) propane feed line (inside convoluted tube for a little extra protection) goes from left to right...

http://www.webnetixs.com/4x4/Propane/propane%20014.jpg
and goes into a sleeve made from 1 1/4" cheap steel angle. The top angle is welded to the cab floor bracing...

http://www.webnetixs.com/4x4/Propane/propane%20013.jpg
the bottom angle iron is hose-clamped. The box is for protection from rocks and a heat shield. Is it starting to look like a Scout II yet?

http://www.webnetixs.com/4x4/Propane/propane%20012.jpg
More convoluted tube to guard against chafing, a heat shield made from the Willys' farm license plate, and the feed goes up inside the inner fender and

http://www.webnetixs.com/4x4/Propane/propane%20006.jpg
comes out next to the battery. The strap is to steady it before

http://www.webnetixs.com/4x4/Propane/propane%20010.jpg
it dips down to the filter & shut-off solenoid. The regulator is mounted to a plate on the IHC A/C bracket with a cork gasket for vibration.

The regulator

and mixer. See the gold box? It really is a Scout!

Very nice. The install looks very clean. How is that gas to propane working for you? Do you only us the propane on the trails? I am looking to run propane only because my truck will be trail ony. What propane kit did you go with?

Thanks guys.

It's gasoline on the street, propane on the trails.

When switching to propane, I run the engine then turn off both fuel supplies. In a minute it stalls. Close the flapper, switch on the propane, hit the starter and if fires right up. It can run a little rich 'cause even thought there is not enough gas in the float bowl to idle, it sucks the last bit of gas out. I open the flapper a little and race it a bit. In 15 sec or so its ready to go.

OK you saw the link, I don't have to plug gotpropane.com (http://www.gotpropane.com) again.:D

Cary, right click any of the pics you want. PM me if you want higher resolution originals.

I just wanted to say what a great job you did on coverting the D27 to open knuckles and disc brakes.
I would say it is better technically speaking then the nice propane conversion you did!!

RoadCapt-

The highest point, the fittings on the top of the mixer cover, are 6 1/2" above the carb airhorn, 10 1/2" over the manifold (Edelbrock 1604).

You sir, are a mental fucking giant!

what "looks" like a closed knuckle d27? I personally can see a pumpkin and a caliper. Thats IT. The caliper already says no no to d27. So we are dealing with an early 30, d44 or dana 60. The u joint size say's its not a 60. ANd since the rest of it is SII that means its a D44. So without him telling you anything and without seeing the whole axle. It is possible to deduce that this is not.. in fact... beleive it or not! a d27!

HOWLER Finished my install this morning, not bad at all did have to cut the hood for clearance on the 800 but it looks good with the scoop on it. I also installed the petronics elec dist setup at the same time and advanced the timming 8* on propane ran great on Gas like dodo, so have it adjusted for a comprimise now leaning more towards the propane. Talked with Cary and he said just the screwdriver weight on the Idle adj screw makes a diff so will play with it on the trail tommorow. Have a rough idle that was not there before, may be the #8 plug again also.

Removed the heater assy off the fender well for the mixer, have not used it in years anyway. Overall so far I am impressed with gotpropane/ Carys system and execeptional customer service. I am going to have to install an electric fuel pump it takes way to long for the mechanical one to fill the carb fuel bowl after shuting off the pro.
