: My Collection
stantjeeper85 06-23-2007, 11:08 PM So after obtaining a third vehicle I realized that I now have a collection, (though the 3rd is only temporarily in my possession, it is still a part of my collection). And so, I figured it was time to introduce my vehicles, along with my newest project.
My 2001 jeep TJ:

And now my newest project, a 1942 Ford GPW:

So my best friend's boss has had this gpw for several years. After a time he decided to take it completley apart for a rebuild. Once the jeep was in pieces, he was called back into active duty. The jeep has stayed in its current state because the owner ever since has just not had time to put it back together.
So my mission is simple: re-assemble the jeep, at my house, and get paid a pretty sum of money. The only thing cooler than that was if i got to keep the jeep. I have all parts for the vehicle. Jeep even comes with original canvas top, gerry cans, and ammo box!

soilantgreen 06-24-2007, 02:30 PM What's the build date for the GPW? Is it a script model?

Well it says the delivery date is 7-29-42, not sure what you mean by "script" model.
Anyhow, got into it yesterday. Pulled the tub off so that drivetrain could be finished off and bolted down.

soilantgreen 06-27-2007, 03:03 PM "Script model" GPWs have "Ford" stamped into the back of the tub below the jerry can mount. Willys also stamped their logo in the same place in their block font.
Around late June or early July of 1942, the army procurement office told both manufacturers to knock off the free advertising. From then on, the composite body used by both is nearly identical.
Ford GPWs have either a script "F" or the whole word "Ford" stamped or cast into nearly every single part. "According to legend" as they say, the govt. wanted a warranty on parts. Since the two models were nearly identical, Henry Ford, being the "frugal" man he was, said he'd be damned if he got tricked into replacing broken Willys parts. So every part has something to identify it as being a Ford built part. The more "F" marked parts, the better (and more original).
Keep them Willys pieces for Willys MBs, you know?
EDIT: Why did you title the thread "Willys" when there isn't a Willys on the property? Oh never mind, I just noticed the Florida State license plates on your TJ...:flipoff2:

Did I make that mistake . . . oops! Must be the lack of education i got from my bachelors degree :p
I think it could be a script model. Ive seen the F on the frame, I know the body is a GPW but im not sure about it being script, ill have to check.
Interesting that the frame and body are ford, but the engine is Willys. The owner must have found the engine elsewhere and swapped it in. Oh well, at least its still an antique.
soilantgreen 07-03-2007, 09:21 PM The large stamping in the back of the tub that says "Ford" or "Willys" is what makes it a "script model". Either way the Ford should have lots of marked parts.
Lots of these jeeps have different engines. They turn up with CJ-2A and -3A engines, Willys Americar engines, later F-head Hurricane engines (and a whole in the hood for the carb to breathe through), and of course the other manufacturer's mill (Ford engines in Willys MBs and Willys engines in Ford GPWs). If you do indeed have an engine from an MB, you could swap it with a guy who has a Ford engine in his MB. Guys in the hobby do it all the time.
There is an infinite amount of info on restoeing the WWII jeep out there. There's even a video that you can buy which is narrated by three of the most well known experts in the hobby.
Enjoy. It sounds like a worthy project.
