: A new insurance question

Does anyone have info on this:

My insurance company was transferred to a different agent(mine got a pink slip I guess) and now the new agent needs an appraisal, and if I want a quoted value policy my rate will go up, even though that's what I had with my previous agent.

Anyway I love state farm and want to keep them. The new agent said she doesn't really know where to get an appraisal (remember I live in Western NE). So I'm thinking of heading down to colorado and getting an appraisal at a 4x4 shop. Anyone done this, it's the only way that I feel I can get a fair appraisal, any other suggestions on where to get a fair appraisal???

Hey Cliffhanger,

I did a similar thing. I have State Farm as well, and after talking with my agent, she told me to add up the cost of all the parts that are aftermarket or custom (labor costs do not count), and add that to the cost (Blue Book) of the stock vehicle. One catch though.....if the parts you have on the vehicle could have come from the factory...like replacing a Dana 30 with a 44 in a EB, you cannot count that in to your cost. Maybe by rating the vehicle in a higher catagory you could increase it's worth to cover those additions.
I have a '97 Ranger (valued at about $10K) that I have insured for over $20K due to all the mods and custom parts.
If they really want an appraisal, definitely take it to a 4x4 shop!
Hope that helps.

I contacted Mark, at MARK TURNER OFFROAD in Ft. Collins, CO. He said he's done a few appraisals and Progressive has never turned them down, but STATE FARM always rejects them. The funny thing is though, he said state farm calls him often to get price quotes for custom parts.

BTW: He does charge, not gonna say what, but it's pretty avg. ;)
