: Dodge flattops/ Ford outers
sn0border88 06-24-2007, 07:22 PM Ok, whats the deal here. I read Mr. N's page, and searched around here and everything I see is different. Some people think you can make it work, others cant, ect. The local pick n pull has a few sets of them that I have my eye on.
So, can I run dodge flattops on a ford d44 and somehow wind up with 5 on 5.5 outers. Locking hub or drive flange I don't care, its trail only.
I know they used unit bearings in some if not all models, what does it really matter for a trail only vehicle that dosent see much trail time.
svt150j49 06-24-2007, 09:21 PM id like to know about this too.. i know they have the flat top off the HD 44 for the drivers side... but no clue on the passenger side...
lil-bronc 06-24-2007, 09:36 PM I am not sure about the Dodge, but the chevy knuckles just require you to use everything chevy outers. I can only assume that it is the same with Dodge. The main question is their a difference detween dodge and chevy?
just my .03 and I have had a drink or two..
svt150j49 06-24-2007, 09:46 PM i think he just wants flat tops, and end up with 5 on 5.5 outers. weither or not its cheby or dodge or ford...

Right, but the chevy knuckles are different than ford, I am not sure about dodge though. Once you change the knuckles you have to deal with everything after it. Brakes, hubs, bearings and so on...
Jrod-13 06-24-2007, 11:54 PM dodge knuckles are totaly bastard..
get chevy/waggy knuckles, with small bearing spindles, and put ford outers on it.
sn0border88 06-25-2007, 09:43 AM I know all about the chevy knuckles, I know they will work but they are much harder to find around here. Thats why im wondering if dodges will work. They do have pass and drivers side flattops from factory
and by "totally bastard" you mean what exactly?
mondtster 06-25-2007, 11:44 AM Just use dodge everything from the knuckle out. The 1/2 ton Dodges have a 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern just like the Fords.
All this stuff should be available off of any '80s Dodge truck. You will have your choice of drive flanges or lock outs.
welndmn 06-25-2007, 11:54 AM Just get a GM kunckle.
Then steel the GM small bearing spindle, and Backing plate/caliper mount.
Everything else is ford.
Use the Ford hubs, bearings, and rotor.
Go buy a new GM caliper.
For all the parts list, search around for the Early Bronco Disc brake swaps.
This is known as Chevy brakes.
Been around a long time.

Wow :shaking:
Last question, if the dodge runs 5 on 5.5 outers with a flange OR lockout do they still run the odd unit bearings like ive heard, or do they run regular wheel bearings.

Anything from the '80s is going to have standard bearings. The unit bearings were only used in the late '70s on the full time 4x4 trucks and anything that is '94 or newer. The '94+ stuff won't work for you anyway.
Personally, I like the Chevy brake setup a bit better than the Dodge stuff. I would however get whatever is easiest for you to fins so that you have good parts availability in your area for future problems.

they are really goofy where the unit bearing bolts up to them, so there is no good way to get a spindle on them, they also have the caliper bolt to the knuckle with two bolts, rather than having an atualy backing plate like a normal knuckle.
True, the 80-93 stuff is normal, but I'm not sure if they are flat tops(don't think they are)

My '83 Ramcharger had flat tops so I know they are out there.

I pulled flat tops off a '88 SUV (whatever its called) and my understanding is that most "later model" Dodges with the SFA have flat tops, dunno.
For some first hand experience, I got these knuckles where they will accept GM caliper bracket ... read lots of grinding! The knuckles use the same 6 spindle bolts so I am going to use waggy outers, but I don't see why you couldn't use Ford stuff.
I know a guy who has used the Dodge knuckle on a Waggy setup, dunno what he used for brakes, might have used the Dodge setup.
I guess my point is that it can be done, and if I can use GM stuff, you should be able to use Ford
dgfordman 06-26-2007, 04:24 PM i had a set of dodge flat tops just the knuckles. then i bolted on all chevy stuff(spindle, caliper braket, and nuts). then put on 78 f150 hubs with drilled and slotted rotors with chevy calipers. works perfect.
sn0border88 06-26-2007, 05:22 PM awesome, thats what I was looking for.
