: Has winching ever screwed up your electrical system?

Has anyone ever fried something specific when winching, and what was it, electrical component wise, that you did?

I've never had an electrical problem before per se, that was quite so weird...(other than the usual generic clicky starter, poor ground problems and of course the ECU capacitor meltdown:p)

Was helping a couple buddies winch a 'kick up onto a trailer today. The battery that was going to be used for the winch was dead, so we hooked up jumper cables from my battery (red optima) to the dead battery that had the winch cables already hooked up to it. (blue optima)

Well, as soon as the winch was started, my voltmeter in the cab crackled and sparked, then the needle went all jittery instead of steady like it has always been.

Winching went on, no problems at all.

Went to restart my sammy later, and it was dead. Main fuse was blown. (I had many years ago replaced the fusible link with an inline 30 amp blade fuse, and have never, ever, had a fuse blow or any problems with it.

Replaced the fuse and she started right up. Parked it, went to restart it, and dead. Fuse blown.

I removed the voltmeter, thinking it was somehow causing the problem 'cause it still is acting abnormal. Didn't change. Vehicle starts right up, but must instantaneously blow the fuse, because as soon as I turn off the ignition and go to restart, it's dead, and I have to put a fresh fuse in to get it to start:confused::mad3:

Any ideas?

something similar happened to my sami.I slapped a warn 9000 winch onto my bumper to spool in the cable. The 9000 ground to the bumper instead of a cable.I started winchin and imediatly smelled smoke. It was coming from the ground from the distributor.I think that is the only ground on a sami.I ended-up installing another ground cable(2 guage)from the engine to the body.

Cheers, thanks ya I have long since replaced the main neg. cable to the block with a good (and much larger) one, made sure all the fastener points were properly contacting and tight, replaced the body ground wire with a motorcycle battery cable, and made sure that the wires using the thermostat housing for ground were all ok, quite some years ago now:D

So before I started it up this morning with a fresh fuse, I measured voltage at batt. 11.51 :barf:

Measured with engine running... 11.51 Ugh.

Decided to try putting a fuse in while it was running to see what would happen. Whoo hoo! The fuse didn't blow as soon as I plugged it in, which I was sure it would, reading was 13.97 volts, and I have shut engine off and restarted it 10 times with out any more weird fuse blowing issues:confused:

I'm happy it seems to be ok now, but damn do I hate electrical crap that I can't figure out. :shaking:

you have a ground from the battery to the frame?
I've made 3 cables just to make sure there are no problems - battery direct to the frame/engine/and frame.

Running the winch off a dead battery hooked to a good battery with jumper cables puts a huge load on the good battery vehicle. Bet the alternator put out it's full capacity which would blow the 30amp fuse.

No, that's one thing I don't have, but by the sounds of it probably should!

It sure kicked my voltmeter's ass:eek:

As well as realy drain the good battery. Wich once disconected from the dead battery the alternator was tring to charge with more than the 30 amps. The fuse cant handle it.

that is the reason for all the arguments about the fuse no fuse in the charging system with the larger alternators. The alternator is limited in its ability by the size of the fuse.
