I have a 70 Aristocrat that I was going to build, but am at a crossroads. I dont really want to destroy a somewhat rare vehicle so I have been toying with the ideaof selling/trading the scout for another. A guy wants to trade me for his rig:

From his e-mail: "I have a 69 800 rockcrawler. It has the low range 4 speed, 345w/cam, wagoneer dana 44's, detroit lockers, 4:56's, 35, D&C 6 point cage, etc. etc."

The SOA/Steering looks a bit scary, but I figure it would all have to be redone anyways. I have a sterling 10.25 for the rear and will prob. start looking for a 60 up front, so I figure I could sell the axles and put the $ back into the build. I'd prob. sell the T19 wide and rebuild a 727to run( I know...crazy...but I like automatics).

Well? What do you think? Good trade or walk away?

Thanks,

Bryan.

Trade for it and then lower the rig a few more inches. :)

I say trade, but I'd check that thing out a little closer.

Those might not be Waggy axles.

Well, Waggies are 6 lug.
He either re-drilled front & rear to 5 lug, or changed the front to 5 lug Ford stuff & got custom rears. But 74-79 Waggy rears are offset.
Many are AMC20s.

If it is a rear 44, most likely it is either a Scout II or maybe 80s Waggy or Cherokee or XJ 44 (don't quote me on the jeep 5 lug).

Make sure it's not a D44 from an 800 (2 piece, tapered & 16 spline I think).

Get the BOM of the housings & do a search on the Dana sight.
I'd pop the difs to check for the lockers & possibly pull the rear shafts to check for spline count.

Very early Waggy's were 5 lug

Yeah, but they were drum brake and closed knuckle, and the rears were offset diff.

I was emailed more detailed pictures and it looks better than I had previously thought. I am going to swap in a Sterling 10.25" FF rear and I will be looking for a front 60 to eventually swap in, so I am not too concerned with the axles it has in it now. This will be more of a starting point to build off of. I'll end up selling the axles and stuff I wont be using to fund the new stuff.

Anyways, the trade is gonna happen in the next few weeks and it will only cost me $100 in gas money for him to deliver it from Arizona to Bakersfield:smokin:.

sweet deal but the only rocks I'd crawl with that are the ones in his driveway (crushed rock).

Nice steering there.

Yeah, that was one of the first things that caught my attention. It will all be changed.

Good score. Your getting a rig that is already started, and someone else is getting a ('rare') rig that will give it [hopefully] the love that it deserves.

Since it sounds like you had no real idea of restoring the 'crat sounds like your getting ahead in this deal with a rig full of parts that atleast are much better sell/trade fodder than the drivetrain on the 'crat.

 to you.
