I have a small nitrogen bottle I use to fill air shocks and in a pinch, tires. It's currently black and scratched up with a rainbow of colors showing through (ugly). I'd like to paint it blue to match my buggy. Would that sort of thing piss of the welding shop that exchanges them for refills?

Do you own the bottle? Do you usually exchange it for another, or do they refill it and you pick the same bottle back up? Some places have the tanks color coded with different color rings, etc. I would check with whom ever you plan in exchanging it with before you paint it.
If you do paint it, don't cover up the label.

Yes I own the bottle but the way it works is that you exchange it for another that's filled, just like you would with your argon/co2 bottles.

Tape off the label identifying what gas it is and if there's any other stickers from companies who have owned it. I've gotten nailed on that before when I painted my CO2 tank. Some places are really pissy about exchaning only their tanks, some aren't.

Thanks. I ended up calling the place I exchange the tank at and he confirmed what you said. I just need to mask off the label before I paint it and they'll be happy.

Ask them nicely and they should give you a new label.

My nitrogen bottle is what they call a watermellon tank, round on both ends, I just take it in and they fill it then and there, Im sure that you could do the same and save the repainting every time.
