: Towbar Opinions for a YJ

Howdy.

Just found this site and had a chance to look around. Looks like a great place to get Jeep help.

Just bought a 93 YJ. 4.0L Auto, 4" lift, 32" tires. Remaining running gear is stock (for now;)). Don't have a trailer to tow it (besides, I won't be towing it that often) so I'm looking at towbars and flat towing. Will tow the YJ with my F150 SuperCrew.

I want to go the "shackle" connect option. Jeep is lifted and I've got a tube bumper. I've found two companies that offer towbars with shackle connects. Currie and Warrior products.

Anyone have experience with either product?
Is one any better/different than the other?
Issues with the shackles?
Anything else I need to consider?

Thanks for the help. SW

I used canyon crawler shackles, basically curries at a cheaper price. they tow much better when being pulled by the shackles than with the bolt on brackest that come with the tow bar. the ride is less bouncy

I've flat towed mine all over Texas and it did fine, just make sure your towing with a heavy vehicle. I tow mine with a heavy ass Land Rover discovery, and it gets real squirly if you stop paying attention for even a second

just use common sense, slow down before the turns and accelerate through them, never slam on the brakes, forget about using reverse, and wire up the brake lights

if you are going to use or the jeep already has a double military wrap spring such as bds the tow shackles wont work.

I have Warrior tow shackles and tow bar, works great to tow my CJ 5 with my J10.

I use the Currie setup on my CJ and really like it.
The "Draw-Tite" tow bar is of very good quality and it folds up for better storage if needed.

The CJ version's shackles are straight so I have no problems with my military wrapped Nationals but the "bent" style YJ version of the Currie shackles may present a problem using military wrap springs as warned about in the post above.

Thx for the responses.

Question regarding the springs.

The best I can tell, it looks like the previous ower put a 4" Pro Comp lift on it. What are double military wrap springs? How can I tell?

You don't have them. Search and you'll be able to see what military wrapped looks like. Search is your friend:D

I flat towed my 33"'d, 4.5" lifted YJ around. My lessons to you:

1) Tow with a heavy rig - my 96 1500 needed 400lbs in the bed to make it feel safer

2) forget brakeing - double your stopping distances (skidding through an intersection is not fun)

3) Watch the corners, go SLOWER than you could with your Jeep alone through them. specially when pavement is wet. (8 wheel slides getting on to the freeway aren't fun)

Everyone,
Thanks for the help. Got the Currie setup on order. Should get in a week.

I don't plan to tow it alot. And I'm lucky that it's pretty flat around my part of Texas - mostly highways with very little elevation...Will look into adding some weight to the bed. i would imagine no tongue weight it would be kind of interesting.

Thx again. SW
