I found a source for raw material (A s**tload of different types......in some catalogues and was wondering if it was worth the time to try to take some friction loss out of the spring packs

I made my own outta Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethlene (UHMWPE?) and it worked for a while... until the plastic packed up with sand. I ended up yanking them when they became sand-impregntated abrasive strips.

Like randii said, they may not last as long as you would like around here (WA = mud for most of the year).

I've also seen where people got "slip paint" from a farm implement store. This paint creates a very low friction surface...hence the name "slip paint". They obviously took apart their leaf springs and painted each individual one. Said it made a huge difference in ride quality. They never said how long it lasted though.

Thats a good point to think about.I bet they would turn into sandpaper after awhile.
I found some UHMW 1/16" or 1/32" material in a McMaster-Carr book.48"x 48" sheets for about 40 bucks.Enough to do 4 springs.
I use that Slip Plate graphite paint quite a bit,I'ts good stuff. Works awesome on your Hi-lift jack.
No more wet lube and the resulting dirt catching goo that screws up the mechanism.
I think I'll try it on the springs too.

I think it's actually called "slip plate". DRM runs it, maybe he will jump in and report on it's effectiveness. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
