: Mounting tires at home?
Rerard 06-05-2002, 06:03 PM Anyone know any tricks? We got the tires off using the high jack and a zuk and then a crowbar and screwdriver, then we got the new tire on with the crowbar and screwdriver but we cant get the bead seated and without it seated we cant get air in the tire.... any suggestions?

Rerard 06-05-2002, 06:16 PM Nevermind I just remembered the gasoline trick from mossberg... thanks
Brutpwr 06-05-2002, 06:54 PM I never used gasoline...imagine it could work or go :nuke: or boom  I'd rather use starting fluid as I'd guess it might be a little more controlled!

Sillyneck 06-05-2002, 06:58 PM run a winch cable around the tire's circumfrence and back onto itself. then draw it in...watch the tire push out and air it up.
2002 FX4 Ranger 06-05-2002, 07:05 PM Gasoline does not work.
You need something that will explode when it is ignited. Ether (Starting fluid) works great BUT can get a little out of hand. I made a 44x19.50 Bogger bounce 8ft in the air.
A ratchet strap works well. The winch deal works too. I like using a cumalong.
Your safest bet is to take it to a tire shop and slip one of the techs $5 and let him just air them up for you. They have the right equipment to do it.
mytzlflick 06-05-2002, 07:38 PM find a motorbike tube or something similar, air the thing up enough to seat the lower bead a bit. then let out the air, pull the tube and gently lift up on the tire while you inflate it.
lotsa soapy water never hurt either
kidwired 06-05-2002, 09:49 PM I just back up over it...pop done, well thats to get it mounted anyway
81hilux 06-06-2002, 07:33 AM like kidwired said, use a vehicle. My buddy always gets a board and puts it up onto the sidewall, and then drives a ways up onto the board. hahha.
jeepnmatt 06-06-2002, 07:44 AM to start seating bead:
it is much easier with 2 people
put a 5-gallon bucket upside-down on a solid, flat floor.
grab the tire with the wheel inside and hod it centered over the bucket with the valve stem side of the tire down.
slam it down against the bucket a few times to get the bead started.
flip the tire over so the valve stem is up and the un-seated bead is down
pull the valve core out of the valve stem
while one person pushes down on the tire to get the bottom bead to seal, the other person holds the air-chuck on the valve stem. air it up until both beads seat. you'll know when they do! thay almost always make a loud pop.
soapy water doesn't seem to help much doing it this way.

Umm... yeah, it does. I've done it. Doesn't make it a good idea, but it does work. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48962

Heheheh... this is probably the best idea in the whole thread. :)
Kidwired and 81Hilux have it too... if you seat one bead (requires a vehicle, a fat friend or two, and a bit of work) manually, you can then use air to seat the other.
bigdude 06-06-2002, 08:28 AM 2nd vote for ratchet strap. Pullit tight around the tire, it starts to squeeze the rim, and start the air.

Hey! thats how I unmount em! Works either way though :D Course easier with beadlocks.
jdjanda 06-06-2002, 10:41 AM A 12.5 on an 8" wheel seats real easy, did it at home with the compressor.

Yeah baby! Been there, done that:) Works great:nuke:
GloNDark 06-06-2002, 11:34 AM I second the gas theory. It does work, works really good too. But not for the faint at heart, or those with hair on their arms.
Run a ratchet strap around that bad boy, tighten it up, hit it with the air chuck. Should do the trick.
70~K5 06-06-2002, 11:42 AM A 3 to 5 gal air tank with a 1.5" tube out of it on a ball valve. Flaten the end of the tube some. Put 125/ 175 psi in the tank, hook a air chuck to the valve stem, and set the end of the pipe by the open side of the bead and turn the ball valve open. Works like starting fluid without the fire. Seat the 11R24.5 tubeless big rig tires for my truck that way. You can reseat a bead on the truck this way too. Just jack it up off the ground and pow. Just don't carry it around full in the truck.:usa:
bigfoot 06-07-2002, 08:07 AM My vote is for the starting fluid or the gasoline. Both are quick and easy, just dont be to attached to your eyebrows or your arm hair:nuke: :D
McSoo 06-07-2002, 08:14 AM Take the valve core out of the tire so that you can pump air into it faster. It will seat the bead MUCH easier. And use some sort of bead lubricant. Otherwise you could risk the bead tearing. (been there)
Weezer 06-07-2002, 08:17 AM I just used the bucket trick to mount up a set of boggers and it worked great. I have tried the ratchet strap before and never had much luck, as for putting gas or starting fluid in your tires I think I would save this technique for when your stuck on the trail with no other options, I cant belive that would be good on a set of tires.

It did.. just gotta jump on the tire a little so its spread out and there is air mixed in with it.

Yeah and thought I was :rasta: for suggesting it;)
I mounted a set of 35's on my buddies ranger rims by just picking the whole thing up over my head and slamming it down so it landed on the tread, seated them every time...
Course, I can see where this wouldn't work for larger tires unless you had some more people....
