What is the best/most efficient way to clean rusty hrew tubing before sending it through the bender?
Thanks,
Brian
wd40 and a scotchbrite/scuff pad. That works with light surface rust, if its really rusty, that wont work

I drop it off to a guy in Derby. Comes back clean as a whistle. Expensive. But it is very effecient cause I don't really have to do anything. :flipoff2:
Another way I clean up rust is with a dotco and a scotch brite pad.

How expensive is it and who is the guy in Derby?

We send all our stuff to http://www.ksdrystripping.com/
If I remember correctly the guys name is Terry. They are great people and have a quick turn around. You would have to hit him up about pricing. :)

Flap disk on a 4" grinder. I just cleaned up a moderately/heavily rusted piece this evening. :)

mild surface rust, I use scotch brite and WD-40 as said above, if the rust is more than light surface rust, I use plumbers emry cloth, it works excelent, but will take time. I had to do my whole chassis before paint. The build took me just long enough, that summer rolled around, and it started to get humid and rusted up pretty good. I swore I would never clean that much tube again!

A cuped wire brush in a 4.5" grinder will work great

I second the wire brush thats how i have done most stuff for years. small stuff goes in the bead blaster. if you have access to a large compressor and a pressureized sand blaster that works real quick That how many large shops blast the rustyou can sift the sand and recyle it just make sure you run it fine you don't want any larger rust particles jamming up in the nozzle. how much do you have to do?

Scotchbrite pad works pretty good but lately I've just been using 200 grit sandpaper discs. They come in a roll for use on a DA and have an adhesive back that sticks to your glove nicely.

i just use sand paper...curl it over the pipe and go to town...works just fine. Then wipe it down with a degreaser to get the dust off. Much much quicker than any electrical way (grinder etc.) because of the tight radius.

I get most of my steel at a yard by weight so it has usually say outside for a time. I use navel jelly, just slap it on with a junk paintbrush and in bout an hour all that is left is some white residue.

i've used naval jelly as well...works good to keep rust from forming and it's tough protective layer...

Scotch brite pad, wd40, and a porn video. That tube will never be cleaner.

8" bench grinder with wire wheel. Put the tube on the rest and spin it. Very easy and fast.

Where do you get your tube at? The yard? I've heard bouge(sp) iron is good, too.

If you have a lot to do you can get one of these.

another vote for wd40 and scotch brite pads for light stuff and the twisted wire cup on a grinder for the heavy stuff.

something Ive done that works well for any kind of rust...
electrolysis
Get some kind of metal gutter, find some in a scrap somewhere, whatever. Fill it with the solution (lye/water, or washing soda/water) insulate the tube from the gutter but make sure its submerged then just hook the electrodes up and your free to go on working on stuff
depending on how heavy the rust is varies the time it takes
its more work in the startup, but once its all setup you can fly through tube like its nothing and get other stuff done in the meantime.
