Will a T-5 Tranny bolt up to a 258 out of a 90 YJ?

Also what do yall think of this tranny, postives and negatives?

Is this going into a YJ or is the YJ motor in a CJ already.\
The T5 will bolt up to a "YJ" 258, All 258's share the same bolt pattern. If the T5 was behind a 4cyl however, you will need to use a 258/T5 bell houseing and it will have a different input shaft spline count. Easily solved.

Now for the bad news:
The T5 is a light duty tranny, prone to failure even behind a 4 cyl. The syncros tend to go quickly with mildly rough shifting and the overall wimpiness leaves a lot to be desired. I destroyed two of them, one behind a 4cyl, and one behind a 4.2. In both cases, the shafts grenaded.

Well after doing more research and yalls answers doesnt seem like a good tranny to me, and I will be passing on it.

Im getting a I6 to put in my YJ(current 4banger) and the guy told me it was a 258 but came out of a 90. after looking around that doesnt seem correct. SO I dont even know the motor now LOL.
Thanks for the info though.

The last year of the T5 (in the Jeeps) was 1986, so you'd have to get a bellhousing from an 82-86 CJ with a 4.2L The AX-15 was the factory 5 speed trans for that particular model year (I'm assuming that's what you have) and has a different bolt pattern. In addition the T5 will have to be mated with an adapter to the NP231 t-case as the stock t-case with a T5 was the Dana300.

Also what do yall think of this tranny, postives and negatives?

The Good: They are plentiful and cheap.
The Bad: The reason they are plentiful and cheap, is that they are crap. They will hold up okay in a stock engine, mostly street, and very light wheeling Jeep. With small tires. Start messing with the factory limitations, and you're gonna grenade it.

If you're looking for a new trans, and you don't wanna find an AX-15, go with a NV3500 if you want the 5 speed. You've got to use an adapter anyway.

A 258 is a 4.2L, so yes it could be a '90.

I got the info from this site. Says the 4.2 stopped in 89

Some of my literature points to the 258 being used in '90:confused:. But regardless of that, the 4.2 in the '89 YJ used both the BA10 and....midway through '89....the AX15.

The 4.2 and the 4.0 have the same bell houseing boltpattern. Therefore, anything that bolts up to a 4.0 theoretically bolts up to a 4.2 (CPS aside) The '89 version (4.2/AX15) is such an example, the 4.0 took its place and used the AX15 behind it for several more years)

And, since this is a YJ we're talking about, you can go with the YJ AX15/NP231 combo to keep your frontdriveline where it's supposed to be, and go with a 258.

I cant recall offhand if it is a light or medium duty tranny, but regardless, it is miles ahead of the T5 in durability.
My wifes YJ has one (4.0, 4.10s, Detroits f&r, 33's) and we beat on it religously and unrelenting. It's held up good so far.

*Edit* dammit...she caught me typing this. I meant SHE beats on it religously and unrelenting

Stacy David said it would hold up to 400 ft-lbs of torque on his new show. That being said I think mine, behind a 258, is getting ready to let go.
