: Rebuild power steering box?
ryanwhit 06-06-2002, 05:49 AM I've done a few searches for rebuilding the P/S box, but it looked like all that got replaced were the seals. The box on my new driver has some play in it...the one one my rig is fine. so i'm gonna swap them, but would like for the one with play to be in good working shape. If there's play in there, does something else need to be replaced, like that worm gear? thanks
ryanwhit 06-06-2002, 03:28 PM anyone know?
Chopperman 06-06-2002, 03:41 PM Have you tried to adjust the play out of it ???
I rebuilt a few of them now but I'm no expert by any means, but from what I've seen so far theres really nothing in the box that can wear out, especially the worm gear. I would just put a new seal on the piston and replace the o-rings, adjust it and call it good. Word to wise though, DO NOT unscrew the worm gear from the piston, there are about 40 bearings in there that will go everywhere and unless you know exactly how to put them back you'll be there for hours....
ryanwhit 06-06-2002, 04:48 PM ok, thats what i needed to know. Thanks.:)
v6toy4x 06-06-2002, 07:38 PM ditto just replace all the o-rings and teflon seals and use a lot of p/s fluid as lube when you re assemble everything to keep from tearing the teflon seals--if you don't remove the worm gear from the piston you can not change the o-rings and teflon seals in the valve assembly which could effect performance--there was a write up on how to reinstall the balls through the hole in the piston where the transfer tube is located it isn't that hard just don't loose any of the balls--oh yeah you might as well tap for hydro assist while you have it apart

ROKTOY 07-09-2002, 12:17 PM There are two needle bearing assemblies that support the sector shaft, but I would
double check the worm play adjustment first.
Using grease and a flat blade screwdriver, the balls go back in quite easily. Details
posted in another recent thread.

Get another box, it's wore out, $50-100 www.car-part.com
subpilot 07-16-2008, 10:39 PM Get another box,
+2
Not worth the PITA. The seals etc will cost you $50+ and when you tear the teflon ring trying to slide the piston back in you'll wish you had just bought a rebuilt one.
Myanarchy 07-17-2008, 07:47 AM On the same note, was reading robert's site last night on putting the balls back in and having trouble visualising it. Anyone got a pic to help a nigga along getting 44balls deep?

Its not hard--will make sense with its in front of you---just use grease ;)

So I stab the worm all the way back in, load the 11 in the tube, then how do I line the others up on the shaft? Looked at it for about 15 minutes last night and scratched my head. Could have been the alchohol though:laughing:
