I am getting ready to order a t-case rebuild kit from SOR. They offer 2 kits for the 4 sp case: 3/73-4/75 and 4/75-8/80. Is there a difference in the bearings and seals in these years? The reason I ask is that I am rebuilding my spare and have no idea what year it is. Thanks for any help.

Yes, there are some differences betweent he 3sp and 4sp parts. The rear tranny shaft bearing is a different diameter and the idler gear thrust washers are different thickness.

go to my site and hit the tech section...there is at least one link on there for t-case identification.

Off-topic, but Woody, check your PM's!

I know there is a difference between the 3sp and 4 sp cases, but SOR has 2 kits for the 4sp case for the years I listed above. I thought that the 70's 4sp cases were all the same. Am I wrong?

I think the difference between the two is in the thrust washers for the idler gear. With the later case, using the wider idler gear, the shims changed. There are minor later changes, but if you are not putting new bushings in the hi and lo gears you should be fine. I would also get the 070-33A shim set so you can get the preload just right with the new bearings...

Get new bushings for at least the low range output gear as this one is always turning on the output shaft when i hi range and wears the most. Best to change them both and they don't come in the it. There are at least 3 different sized bushings so be sure you get the right ones.

I sound like a broken record, but check with Mudrak (http://www.mudrak.com) for tcase rebuild kits for price and availability and advice. He rebuilt two tcases for me.

I did check with Mudrak, and he is a little pricey for me right now. I am sure he does excellent work, but I just don't have the cash right now that he wants for a kit and install. Plus the fiance is going to cut my land cruiser fund off if I keep spending money at this rate, that or I will have to let her go on a shopping spree:eek:  to even things out. I will see about getting a kit from Mudrak though. I have a line on a rebuild kit just like the one SOR sells but for a lot less. And yes I did check woody's site already, but it did not have much on the identification of the t-case. If nothing else i will take the internals out of my cracked 6/74 case (while praying it is the original), order the corresponding kit, and put it all in the spare case I have. Thanks for the help guys:beer:

A 6/'74 case may have the narrow idler of the three speed case so check the donor case and the spare for compatability...I also agree that although Mudrak was veryhelpful, his prices are a bit more expensive than other places. I got a split case rebuild from himand it was $250... It could be found at other retailers for less then as I discovered... Every rebuild kit I have seen is the same Austrailian kit with KOYO bearings and aftermarket gaskets, so shop around.
