I hit a machine shop auction today w/ the hopes of snagging a CNC B'port that was on the block. The B'port ended up going for $2800. I wanted to keep bidding soooooo bad, but I just could not afford any more than that, no matter how I tried to swing it. Most of the bidders dropped out at $1500 or so, only me and one other guy to the end. He evidently had more money :) The machine was in excellent shape, by far the best condition 1980's vintage stuff I have seen yet. I was seriously racking my brain to figure out what I could hock to win it. Oh well, one will come around again, right?

Anyhow, I got some great deals on other stuff. Along w/ some treasures I need help identifying.

Here are some pictures, see the captions bellow for what I need help identifying.

http://www.rollmeover.com/bronco_fab/lathe/low_res/tooling001.jpg

Starting from the left, 3 5/8 Albrecht chucks, 1 3/8 Albrecht chuck, 2 1/4 Albrecht chucks. 3 assorted small jacob's chucks, and a couple of small rigid brand chucks. Various boring bar heads and shell and EM holders. Things I don't know what they are, the long silver toolholder? in the lower middle section. It has no manufacturers markings that I found during brief inspection. The other item is the large black thing on the right. Close ups in the next to pics. I am guessing some kind of quick change tool holder.

Both unknowns together.

On the left, all of the tap handles are starrett brand. 3 jacobs rubber flex chucks in the foreground on the left. Weird right angle drive for something above them. Center, Brown&Sharp digital micrometer. Center, foreground, mitutoyo calipers. Right, 4 DTI's of various configuration, all starrett brand. Next right, two indexable lathe bits for TNMG. Next two pair of vice grips, one new.

One box of triangle inserts of various size and styles.

And lastly 1 Rigid chain wrench, 2 Vise Grip chain clamps, Several spanners, both adjustable and fixed, and 4 new c-clamps.

I also purchased a 7HP, 80 Gallon Eaton compressor, I won't be able to bring that home until tomorrow. I think I did pretty good, I got all of the above, including the compressor for $575. What do you think?

Any help with the couple of mystery items would be appreciated.

Jason

From what I gather in the pictures the items both have a #3 or so morse taper for using in the tailstock of a lathe. They are both quick change collet style holders in our shop we use something like that for tapping. The only other thing I was wondering is if the long one is a floating head unit. Maybe this will help MSC supply company should have the things needed to make these work. Hope this helps

I don't know what the long silver cylinder is but the two black R8 (looks like in the pics) tool holders are quick change units. There are many styles and they are usually stamped on the OD with the manufacturer and style.

If you need to unload any of the R8 stuff let me know.

Nice score!

It is a quick tool change for a drill press. That is the female end and the male end you cna put drills taps or what ever in. Good score.

Well, I got the air compressor home yesterday. Turns out it is a IR, not a eaton. I couldn't see it in the shop, it was built in a wall, and we were going on the owners description. It is 80 gallons, and has perhaps the largest piston compressor head I have ever seen in non commercial use. The specs on it are 18.9 CFM @ 175 PSI. Yup, not a typo, @175pis. The thing is mamoth. I will try to get pictures later tonight.

As for the tool holders. I have found more about the black one, it is a McCrosky Wizard quick change holder, the company is still in business and still makes them, however, I have yet to find a dealer that sells the tool holders. I have an email into them requesting a catalog, price list, and dealer names if any.

The silver guy is still unknown. No markings on it whatsoever, except the arbor, which is a MT to JT adapter. It's OAL including the arbor is about 12"s, it does not seem to "float", the wide knurled collar roatates and moves a ~5/16 cross pin up and down in the bore inside. The knurled cap alignes a ~1/8" groove in the cap w/ the body and "cams" downward blocks the groove in the body when the cap is rotated clockwise. It is defenitely a tool holder of some sort, but w/o the collets or whatever goes inside it, it is pretty useless.

I am not ready to sell anything off yet. I am hoping to get rid of my Gorton mill and find a B'port w/ R8 taper, in the meantime, I have been remaching some R8 stuff to fit Gorton taper.

I had no idea that the three large boring bar heads were worth so much money. They were in the box w/ all the Albrecht chucks, which I knew were high end, but the cost of the 2 3" boring bar heads, and the one 4" one would have paid for my bid on the box about 8 times :D

I should have bought a lot more shit, but I was going on 36 hours w/ no sleep (worked midnights the night before) and I was just shot. I finally had to draw the line about 4pm that day and go. The auction went for a couple more hours after I was gone.

Our Gorton mill has an R8 collet, maybe you can find one?

My mill is an 0-16a, as far as I have found, Gorton never had a R8 spindle for it. At the time, they thought their tri-lobe GTM collet was going to be the new standard, and it never caught on. Regardless, the price of a spindle would exceed the cost of a B'port. Well's Index regrinds GTM to R8, but it is a ginormous fuckarow to get it done, quill, bearings and spindle all have to go off to get the regrind done true to the quill, and I cannot afford to have my machine down that long.

Anyhow, here are the promised pics of the air compressor. Not a 7.5HP after all, just a 5HP, but I wired it up today, and I am more than happy with it. Filled the 80 gallon tank to 150 psi (current pressure switch setting) in just under 5 minutes. Mt'd it, put it online to my shop plumbing, including my 40 gallon axillary tank, and it took right around 7 minutes to fill :)

Sweet deal.

It doesn't come close to that kind of score, but a couple of weeks ago I snagged a Lufkin depth mic (No. 514 IIRC) at a yard sale for $1, it came with 0-6" rods and the little spanner. Cleaned it up a little bit and WD'ed the threads, and according to the gage blocks at work it's all good. I was fairly pleased with that.
