I need names, and if possible addresses or phone numbers of custom 4x4 shops in Texas. Hard to find anything besides california or colorado listings on the net. I need 4x4 custom shops from complete buildups to axle assembiles to suspension work to cage work, whatever. Thanks. I'll be compiling my list and putting it where it's easily accessible.

I know about sunray engineering in weatherford, who else is out there?

Look into a place called Diamond Off-Road in Grapevine, TX. I can't remember their #, but they are near DFW airport. They do mostly Jeep stuff, but their owner drives an old Bronco, and has worked on Blazers before I'm sure...

Good Luck!!

thanks, I do most of MY own work, but I need a list for two reasons...one is that I know a lot of people that'd rather pay to have it done. Two, is that I'm graduating college with an engineering technology degree in a year, and I'm researching places to WORK. Keep em coming...

I've been told that Custom Jeep is being sued. Sold some kid a jeep with a salvaged title without telling him.

Also, a guy i know with a jeep(he is on this board) had some work done there and he says he isnt very happy with it.

Give me a call when you get out. An engineering technology degree gives you the exact experience we are looking for. Im in a very drawn out process of obtaining my mech engr degree. Im hoping to free up some time here by next semester so i can get back to taking classes. Ill probably switch to engr tech since it is more of what i need.

Hey Capn,

You might want to contact some of the businesses about a SUMMER JOB. Be up front that you're looking to learn & work this summer. Good experience, and good references help.

Just wondering about your degee. Any machine work (lathe, mill)? Welding? Fabrication? etc.

Sigh meet up with a "kid" going for his four year ME who didn't know my old LeBlond metal lathe was! He was a 3rd year student, but hadn't gotten his hands duty in the lab! Unreal.

Also keep in mind that working at shop starting at $12 hour is cool, but some of techs are pulling in close to $25/hour in the high tech sector. Alas, LOTS of folks have been laid off in the last year... but plan ahead when things pick up. I'm a "high tech EE" while the pay is good, I just plan ahead that every six years I get laid off for 6 months. Those six months are then used for job hunting and WRENCHING time. :D

Wow another post brought up from the dead. :flipoff2:

It looks like I'm going to have to find a real internship for this summer with a bigger firm. I plan to do fab work as a sideline though. As for my skills, I grew up in a truck equipment shop. I've got a good working knowledge of shears, punches, press brakes, lathes, mills, tube benders, welding, ect. And anything that I haven't had previous experience with, I can learn pretty quick.

Ditto on all positive comments about Texas Auto Gear. The owner, David Yackley, is in the latest JP magazine. He was in New Mexico with the Wagoneer machine shop guys during their, "big meats run."

Texas Auto Gear built me my RC D60 axles. The axle tubes are removed and re-tubed with DOM tubing. Other shops will insert a sleeve and butt weld it. IMHO, that is not as strong and could affect oiling. David is in the process of building me some custome
medium steer arms right now.

You should stop by and check these guys out. Be sure to say hello for me. I'm sure he'll remember me....

Never purchased anything from Dave and crew at Texas auto gear but ran with them at farmington. nice work. I belive Paul H on the cover JP had them do some of the work and Paul also has a welding shop. he builds rockwell brake kits. control arms etc
the latest WMS 44 inch plus run about 2 months ago had a white cherokee everyone was asking about. that would be more fo there work.

Hard core and Huge are what their rigs are. if you dont mind taking a number I bet he can help anyone with just about anything, especially transmissions...

I've been visiting Texas Auto Gear a lot lately. Everytime I go go there my truck looks like a stocker (with a 9" lift and 36's) they do some nice work there. One of the rockwell swapped jeeps they are working on right now has behind the axle steering that ruuns through the control arm. Hard to explain but it looks sweet. They also have some of the prettiest welds I've seen. And the best part is, the won't do booty fab. If you come up to them with some crazy idea ( I know this from experience) they will talk you out of it, if they don't like it.
I brought them a front axle to cut down for my explorer, and they found that the long side tube that I had supplied was bent. They had another axle laying around, and replaced mine, no extra charge. They do quality work and they want you to leave satisfied with what they have done. I have sent all of my friends there ever since.

Two questions:
1. Why don't you move out of Texas to a shop in CA or AZ?
2. Why do you think a degree in engineering technology is so special that you mention it? You don't say if its an AS or BS.
