: Need input - '84 GMC 3/4T w/ 6.2 DIESEL
tigger4x 06-06-2002, 04:16 PM I have a guy storing a truck at my facility and wants to sell it. He says he "has to fix it up a little and then paint it" before he will sell it. I asked how much he would be willing to take for it IF it is taken as is. He said that he would be willing to let it go for somewhere between $1k to $2k. I am thinking it would be sweet to flatbed it and sell off the narrow bed and boxes that run the full length of both sides. He told me that I should be able to get what he's asking for the truck, if not close to, out of the bed and boxes.
Here's the skinny on what I know so far ...
1984 GMC 2500 series 2 door w/ stepside & side boxes (wood bed)
6.2L Diesel with about $1K since its rebuild
(... he says its a 6.9L diesel but the badges on the side say 6.2)
Keys to all the boxes and they supposedly lock. One is kinda pushed in.
Needs windshield - cracked in two places
Needs passenger door - smashed in lengthwise
Needs bench seat redone/replaced - fabric torn & padding is crap underneath
I guess what I am really after is the opinion of you Diesel-heads out there and what there is to know on the GMC 6.2L Diesel.
That and does anyone out there want/need the bed and/or boxes
I'll post pics if anybody wants 'em.
BIG THANKS !!!
tigger4x 06-07-2002, 05:56 PM I just went out and checked on a coupla things ... rear axle is a 14BOLT !!
I am looking for a dualie axle to take its place.:D I am open to trades. Let's talk it over. Say a swap of my axle for yours, this would include the rims and tires to go with their respective axles, maybe some cash, maybe not. A direct bolt up would be ideal of course. What better way to get rid of your dualie axle instead of spending some BIG $$$ converting it! I don't have to have a 14 bolt dualie SO lemme know what ya got that I might want, i.e. D70 etc.
Other things I am in need of ...
Passenger door
Bench seat
Mirrors
A quad cab or a cabover camper
Windshield
Aux. diesel fuel tank
Post what ya got here! THANKS!!
road1will 06-07-2002, 06:18 PM well that 6.2 is crap is you want it for more than well, anything. look at the power figures for it and tell me its a good motor  they didnt have very good reliability records either.
is it a 4x4? if so, i would flatbed it, hack the front fenders to oblivion, run about 4" of lift, and clear 42s no problem.
if its a stick, it will be the SM465. auto would be a TH400.
trans case would be NP205 or maybe 208.
front axle a D60 (if 4x4).
if you are looking at it for a tow rig, then i would buy it and swap in a 454. relatively simple swap, and you will have a helluva lot more power throughout the RPM range.
good luck with it, it should be a good dailydriver/wheeler/camper if you build it right.
road1will 06-07-2002, 06:20 PM oh yeah i forgot, i have a dually D70 rearend out of a late 70s dodge towtruck thats in OK shape. $300 and its yours, ill pallet it and drop it off at the nearest freight terminal free of charge.
tigger4x 06-07-2002, 08:19 PM HEY 9 VOLT !!
The guy said it was a 6.9L, but the badges say its a 6.2L!
It is NOT a 4x4 and I dunno what is up front, but the rear is most definitely a 3/4 Ton 14 bolt. It is an auto though. Is it still the TH400?!? It should be anyways. As far as the Diesel goes, I haven't seen the numbers as far as the 6.2L in comparison to the 6.9L, or even the 454, so I couldn't say good or bad either way. A 454 is really not what I am looking for. Its gonna be a tow rig mostly and the 454 sucks down gas like there's no tomorrow. According to the seller the diesel gets approx. 25mpg. That has my attention for sure! About a month ago I rented a Dodge Quad Cab 1500 and it killed me in gas expenses for the week. With the dual tanks on this truck I should be able to go quite the distance and only feel a pinch and not a full awn punch in the wallet.;)
I got a couple leads on some D70s in S. CA near a buddy of mine and one possibly here in AZ. I don't know what they are asking for them yet, but do you have any idea how much it would be to ship yours to 85308? I have a commercial business addy if that helps and can take delivery anytime.
I'm gonna flatbed it to convert it to a 5th wheel(removable) and to haul a cabover IF I can find one to fit. The custom flatbed would be long enough and with the dualie axle under it would be more than wide enough to put a :jeep2: on the back. I need to make sure it has the grunt to be a tow rig as well to pull the trailer with my :jeep: on it and all of my junk.
KEEP THE GOD INFO COMING !!
ANYBODY have a better diesel to stuff in this beast:question:
livermore2 06-09-2002, 12:45 AM if its a 3/4 ton (2500) then you dont have a 60 you have a 44 or ten bolt up front. the 6.2 is a boat anchor. really a piece of shit. if it has a 400 or 465 with a 205 thats good. but the 203 or 208 is crap too. the only plus if it has a 6.2 is you can swap for a 454 and never have to worry about smog.
Paul Gagnon 06-09-2002, 02:13 AM Go to the Chevy forum and look at the pictures of your trucks thread. The first one is my '82 C20 2wd 6.2L with TH400, I paid $1000 Canadian for it. Judge the worth of this truck you are looking at from there.

PAUL ... I'm gonna hafta check which axle is under the front tomorrow. Main question I have for you is how has the 6.2L diesel been treating you? The PO says this one gets about 25mpg on Diesel2 and has about 1K on it right now. This one doesn't have the full wide bed like yours, but rather narrow sides w/wood bed and the lockable work boxes down the sides. I'm gonna sell them off and fab up a flatbed to go over a "new to me" dualie rear axle. I am assuming that the tranny will be a TH400 cuz its an auto. Any other auto trannies it may have come with? Being the 2500 series 3/4T I would think it was a TH400, but being diesel I really dunno. I want to use this as an occasional driver, parts hauler, tow rig, etc. Any pointers on making this diesel perform and/or last me a long time? I doubt the PO has abused it since the rebuild. It had been a company work truck for some utility service prior. IF the 6.2L is such a dog, can I modify it somewhat easily or what can I upgrade it to? Are there any hoops I'll have to jump through to do it and do it right?
THANKS PAUL!
ForestCam 06-09-2002, 06:09 AM I fail to see the problem here. You're getting a hell of a tow rig for under 2 grand with a freshly rebuilt engine, in other words, drive the sucker 'till the wheels fall off!:D
I'll never understand people when they say "Oh you gotta get that engine outta there and drop in one of these", if the fawker works for what you want use it!:D
Really though, the 6.2 isn't a bad engine at all, the nice thing is you'll get good milage hauling or not (try to do that w/ a 454).
Keep the oil changed and ONLY use 30wt! Most of the 6.2 (or any diesel engine) problems I've ever heard of were from people using multi-weight oil in them insted of reading the owners manual to see what they were actually supposed to use.
Been so long ago I'd almost forgot. Way back when I was the lube guy at a Chevy dealership (read somewhere between 84-89) this guy bought a Burb with a 6.2 and he put 100k on it in less then a year. He was in every two weeks for an oil change and that was it! He never had problem one with it and it had over 300k on it the last I saw it.
I don't quite get the 6.9 deal though unless the bored the block oversized and the guy was told it'd be a 6.9 afterward. You know, like the guys that call thier 350 a 360 'n such after they have the block bored .30 over.
If it's a TH400 the pan will look like this http://www.motorchrome.com/online-store/scstore/graphics/127-1store.jpg
700R looks like this http://www.motorchrome.com/online-store/scstore/graphics/129store.jpg
And the TH350 (doubt it has this but ya never know) http://www.motorchrome.com/online-store/scstore/graphics/125-1store.jpg
Whatever trans it has make sure it has a GOOD cooler!
Damn man you're in the land of zero rust I can't believe you can't just find a door for that thing laying on the side of the road!
livermore2 06-09-2002, 06:58 AM Banks makes a kit
TNScrambler 06-09-2002, 10:29 AM I wouldn't be afraid of the 6.2 it is a good motor despite what many people say about it, I know of several that have gone many miles and performed great with few problems. There is a machine shop out in Middle TN that uses them in their delivery vehicles, one I know has well over 500k on the origonal engine....not saying that they'll last forever, but defenatly do as advised and perform proper maintence on it. I have a good buddy with one in an '83 K20 with sm465/np208 and 3.73 gears, he gets 21 - 22 mpg, but he can't go much above 60, 65 without it sucking down the fuel.
Justin Ray
6.9L would be an International/Ford diesel. Doubt he could have bored and stroked 6.2 that much without spending major dollars. Guessing its a 6.2 and the guy wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed.
Which 14 bolt? Semi floater or full? A dually won't bolt in as the spring perches are in a different location. Might want to consider converting your current axle to a dually.
Paul Gagnon 06-09-2002, 11:32 AM I haven't had my truck all that long but the 6.2L runs pretty good. For me it is a good cheap work truck that has been pretty reliable so far. The only thing I've had problems with was the alternator and an exhaust manifold gasket. It is a dog but I don't mind. When I want to go fast I have my Mustang. :)
Steve N 06-09-2002, 11:39 AM I'll buy that crappy 6.2 from you. They suck sell it to me cheap. I was thinking of doing a little freshening of the 200k plus one in my 'burb. It has injection pump issues but still runs fine.
Chief yelling alot 06-09-2002, 12:11 PM take care of the 6.2 and youll be fine
I went to a reuck pull about a week ago and they were pulling an old kenworth dumper up a very slight angle on dirt. there were a lote of V-8 trucks some stock some major modifyed and they had all large tires. When they pulled they were all over the track trying to keep it streight and there times wernt nothing to write home about. Some v8 did really good and then there was this stock GMC with the 6.2 3/4 tone with factory street tires and they hooked him up and dam was that truck quick and smoth. It just pulled grate no bouncing around and beat alot of gas guys but dam was it somthe and quick and under controll
tigger4x 06-09-2002, 01:48 PM  YOU GUYS ARE FAWKING AWESOME!!!
I 100% appreciate all of the good info and shedding some much needed light on the potential this truck has. Never had a Chebby before, only been Ferds and Heeps. Its good to hear that most of the negative info wasn't as big as was made out to be.
Forestcam ... Thanks for the pan pics! Gonna go check on that right now.:D As far as fluids go, I'm gonna run with coolers on EVERYTHING and use all Amsoil fluids, just gotta find a local dealer. I also hafta check on the front axle.
Paul ... Thanks for the insight on your truck and exprience! Any other hints?! You'll definitely see me in your chebby forum for sure! :D Just giving you fair warning!;)
Chiefy ... wish I coulda seen that IRL, then I could tell all the naysayers :flipoff2:
SteveN ... IF I find a better set-up I'll keep you in mind but just not now.;)
Ramv ... moving the spring perches is really no biggie. I just did that to my 14bolt to get it to go under my :jeep: How much is involved in converting over from single to dualie? I'm thinking it would be easier to find someone who has a dualie 14 or 70 and wants to trade it for my single 14. Anybody?!? Bueller?!?
TNscrambler ... thanks for the good word on longevity. I think I'll do better than your buddy seeing as he has an SM465 and I should have the TH400. I'm gonna have to really look at gearing for better towing capabilities. Any ideas on how to get the lower grunt with a good size load, read 25'+ trailer with :jeep: and a buncha goodies on it w/ a cabover on the flatbed?!?
If you guys have anything else to add let 'er rip!!!
Hillbilly 06-09-2002, 04:26 PM First let me tell you if it really is 2wd then you're going to have a heck of a time finding a front axle under there.:flipoff2: Asfar as pulling power, granted it won't hold a light to a newer Cummins or Powerstroke, but you aren't paying that kind of price either.

A truck w/a TH400 will be going slower than one w/a 465 down the highway, but only a couple mph.

I hope you like driving on the shoulder.

Cool, as long as you know about the perches, since the 1tons did use different spring placement
livermore2 06-10-2002, 04:06 PM the 6.2 POS produces a whopping 140 HP and 240 ft pounds of touque on its best day.

I call bull
my IH 304 gas makes 273 FT at 2800
tigger4x 06-10-2002, 07:59 PM Okay okay ... I pulled a major :rasta: on thinking it had a front axle.:emb:
2nd ooops ... I took a look underneath and didn't find a familiar looking tranny pan. Soooo, I took a second look through the passenger window this time, kinda like looking through pond water. :eek:Eatza steeeck! (going out on a limb here A$$-ooming its a SM465)
I am already prepared to move the spring perches to get the Dually axle up under it. Like I said, I am already doing that to my 14 bolt to get it under my '76 Chero.
The new and improved question of the day is : "Seeing as how the 6.2L has a manual tranny bolted to it now, what does it take to get it to bolt up to a TH400 instead:question:"
THANKS AGAIN !

A 6.2 flex plate (don't know if they're all the same, but I suspect they are) and a TH400.
And the above figures for the 6.2 sound in the ball park. They varied a bit over the years and applications.

unfortunatly he is somewhat correct. a 6.2 diesel C code (found in half tons and maybe some 3/4s) has 135hp and 240lb/ft @ 2000 rpm. The J code (1-tons and some 3/4s) had 155hp and i THINK around 260-280lb/ft @ 2000rpm. torque isn't alot but it is down low.
Banks turbo kits claim 60hp and 110lb/ft. theres a HUGE difference between a turbo and a NA 6.2.
i have a 6.2, i like it... its slow as crap but it hasn't given me any problems or let me down when its had to do work
