greetings oh knowledgable tool forum posters

I have a Radical sports racer in the shop that we are installing a pneumatic gear shift on. I have run into a problem on the gear shift linkage.

A shift rod runs from a bellcrank on the gearbox, to the shift handle. This is a sequential shift tranny, motor is a R1. The paddle shift pneumatic actuators are going to attach to the other side of the shift handle.

My problem lies in the rod ends, one is a male heim 5/16 x 5/16 and the acutator side is 1/4 x 1/4 but female heim. They don't make 1/4 x 5/16 (bore) female heims that I can find. Remember this is a race car so only aero or race quality heims need apply.

The gear lever is bushed and tapp'ed to 5/16th.

Does anyone make a stud with 5/16th on one end, and 1/4" on the either. both fine thread. needs to be about 3 inches long at most. I could then thread the stud through the gear lever, and attach each heim on either side.

I have tried McMaster, but perhaps I am using the incorrect terms. stud, threaded rod, adapter screws, bolts.

help? please

thanks

Grant

I would get a 1/4" stud and a 5/16" stud and weld them together myself.

Hell, for that matter, if both are RH thread, just cut the head off of two bolts and weld those together.

Travis, that is my ultimate last resort. not that I dont trust my welding, but that is one delicate small stud, and this is a pretty wicked fast car.

I may resort to having one machined.

am I even referring to the fastener by the correct term?

A 1/4 and 5/16" stud isn't the small.

I'de just line them up with a small gap between them, weld all the way around, grind clean, and paint.

I wouldn't be worried about strength at that point.

Don't like that, get some round stock, turn down ends to size necessary to tap them.

Do it right and have a machine shop turn the end down to 1/4-20. Minor diameter of a 5/16-18 is ~.257 and the major diam of the 1/4-20 is ~ .245" so any compitent machinist should be able to do it. If I were closer I'd hook you up... if is for children though.

I'm sure you could work around it, but without some pictures or plans I can't really help you. Maybe just a plain bushing would work?
Here's a source for aircraft hardware->

If all you want is a custom stud made that has two different diameter ends, I'm sure any decent machinist could make one for a reasonable price. It's not a complicated job.

Try searching for "Universal Stud". You might find what you're looking for

edit: I found what you're looking for in a catalog, SPEC stock fasteners. But I cant find it online to give you a link. Its called a Universal Stud in that catalog, but I cant find anything else like it anywhere.
