All Right this is for you D44 guys that have done your own R/P
I have done plenty of 3rd member zuk 9"and toy style R/P but how do you measure ring gear preload on the bearings or is this not importatnt although I cant see how it can be overlooked ????

I assume that you're referring to the case preload??? I set them up so that they fit snugly into the case with lite taps from a rubber mallet. This is done with shims located behind the bearings, this is what sets the backlash also, so once the case preload is good, swap shims acordingly to get the right backlash, while keeping the same total shim thickness. Not a pro, but have set up 6 or so D44's this way.

wilson wins ! Exactly correct. Some new bearings will specify some additional loading to allow for innitial wear in.

Heres what I usually do. Take your old carrier bearing and stretch the inside out a little to make a slip fit on the carrier. Do all your set up stuff using only the mallot to install the carirer. Then when you press on the bearings for the final time, you should be all set. It will go in a bit tighter as they arnt seated/warn in yet. But this should safly make up the .00x delta called for in the specs for old/new bearings...

Yes the drop out units are easier, if at all possible remove the axle to do your first setup. There will be a few in/out/shim repeat operations and this is where the slip fit "dummy"bearings pay off...
