Got the slab poured, and actually put some vehicles in it today.
I still need to wire it,plumb it for compressed air, and put my 2 poster inside. I'm excited though!

Very nice looking shop, is the over hang for firewood.. tractor implements?

I was planning on doing a search on "shop pics" and dammed if you don't have almost exactly what I'm looking for!

What's the LxWxH ? ... Estimated cost to date?

Thanks

I am not sure of the breakdown, but for grading(1 side was 18" off grade) 6" of concrete, mesh and fiber, polished, sealed and cut I am into the slab for $7K

ThanksThe building is 30'x30'x12', the lean to is another 8' out. I figure I can use it for tractor/atv/storage, and it would be stupid simple to enclose it for an office or whatever. I also have plenty of room to go out back in a few years, maybe extend it another 20' when I run out of room.

I'm into the building with slab for about $23K right now, still have to wire it and put my lift in though.
I am also black topping the area underneath the leanto, and the area outside of it, and in front of the building.

I meant to ask in my first post but did you build it yourself or contract the job?

I'm sure you researched other style buildings when you decided to go with a wood frame , how do they compare to the steel "do-it-yourself" kits?

GTO under the tarp?the price included install, 2 guys and a JD tractor had it up in 3 days.

GTO CLONE under the tarp, 63 Vette under the cover. The Pontiac is my hotrod, the Vette is my wife's.

I didn't really consider the steel do DIY type building, I didn't have the time, although I have heard there are some really nice ones available.

not to rain on your parade but you can roll the shit out of it (not recommended) and stuff will still eat it up and leave imprints. also over rolling causes it to break apart due to deflection(?), meaning itll only compact so much before it breaks apart. not sure about the types of asphalt in your area or prices but if you put alot of heavy stuff on there, ask for 4C asphalt about 3-4 inches thick. its the same stuff they use on most roads around here and it cures hard as a rock (since it has a ton of aggrigate in it). even so, no matter what type of asphalt you get, on a nice hot sunny day, anything heavy can sink into it. sorry about the improv asphalt lesson. that shop looks magnificent, iss the polished concrete any slicker then non polished? keep up the good work on it.

Rolling it tight seems to b an acquired skill from what I've seen.
The biggest thing I have is my truck so I'll survive.

The polished concrete is fine when dry, I had my pontiac in there and it pissed atf and a small amount of oil, some simple green and shop towels wiped it right up.
I imagine oil on top would be a bit slicker.

I noticed the green transformer box in a pic, while it may be "out of the way" they have a tendancy to magnetize (attract) vehilces, usually the ones who's operators are not aware of the box.

I have same at the end of my driveway (2ft off the edge), and it has been hit 3 times, once pushed completly off the slab twixt it was mounted.

I have since placed a large stone 5ft from the box, should catch anything that strays that direction.

might consider similar.

The power co gets pissy when they have to re-fuse six others and replace one on a Saturday afternoon. Oddly, my buddy has never recieved a bill for the damages, nor have I.

Mine has been hit twice already  I hate it's location, but what am I gonna do? I was thinking of sinking some concrete filled pipe by the 2 outside corners, but I'll probably zap my ass.

I was told by the area supervisor of the power co. " You need to move your driveway, if we come to move the box, you won't like the results"

He was an ass and was very unfriendly about the whole deal. started running his mouth soon as he jumped out of his truck, didn't stop tell his crew showed up. I really wanted to harm this individual.

I obtained some large limestone boulders, one about 3ft in dia, from a contruction site (for free) and set them so they would be hit before the box would. so far so good, I feel for the one who hits them, anything smaller than a pickup is gonna get some nice damage.

very true on the good and bad asphalt companies. asphalt does need to be compacted but normally only to 97% maximum density, any more and it can start to spread and break apart from over compacting. i work for one of the better residential asphalt companies in our neck of the woods and have seen firsthand the shitty ass work some companies are capable of. if at all possible, try and get a company that uses a road paver, itll make the driveway that much nicer. most companies use little spreader box deals that can turn a nice driveway into garbage real quick.

Some just didn't show up for the estimate, and some didn't even call back.

I went with a company named T&A because, well, because of the name  They already did the upper part of my driveway, nice work, and the owner gave me my estimate on the spot. He actually went over all of the work they would do, and they were very professional.

It's hard to find good people in any kind of construction/contracting anymore.

t&a  we have a company up here called "B-M":D there are alot of of shitty asphalt companies out there. about 5 or so closed up shop this year around us cause they couldnt compete in the residential market with us (thats my take on it any way cause they all sucked major ass). make sure they lay the asphalt at the thickness they said they would. alot of companies will grade the driveway so it looks like youll get 3inches of asphalt or what ever but really your getting 2 or so but they still charge you the cost for 3 (they carge for whatever tonage it would be for 3 inches but give you 2). if your going to be there, get a wire coat hanger or something and markt it with tape or something at what ever thickness they said they would lay and have them measure it every so often while your standing there.

http://www.alliedasphalt.com/allied/Index.htm old pictures but thats the company i work for. in fact some of those pictures are at least 8 years old. the most they laid in one day was 5000 tons which is a record up here for most asphalt laid by a private company in 1 day. they said the motors on the pavers were glowing red when they finished. :smokin:

Just to shine a little light on what everyone is talking about as far as overcompaction from what is actually happening when you overcompact. Someone mentioned up above that the density should be at most 97%. This is correct, the state of CA Transportation Dept. (Caltrans) actually deducts money from pavement that has been compacted more than this. The reason being is that the only way to compact greater than 97% is to compact with such a force that it is actually breaking the aggregate and in turn, ruducing the overall strength of the mat. This is not usually the case with driveways. Driveways are usually layed in one lift of substantial thickness (2" to 4") and compacted with a peanut (sidewalk) roller. You have nothing to worry about, just keep the point loads off during the heat.

And yes, diesel does destroy AC, it breaks down the oils that hold the aggregate together. They used to use diesel during paving to clean the pavers and shovels (We use a more environmentally friendly spray now)

My lift was wired(220) and I got 2 more 220's, 1 for my compressor, and one for whatever.
I had 10 quad 110'a installed, some t8 overhead lights, and a wall mounted light next to my lift. Got a high outlet for my gas fired heater, 2 outdoor big halogen lights, and a porch light.

i concur, the driveway is sort of a hack. those guys should know better then to just drag down the approach to the drive like that. over time it will just crack and break up then all that will just slowly travel up the drive. not many people tamp the edges anymore but ANY company that does is worth it. looks better and the edges dont break and crack as easily. not sure what they used to lay it down but as long as it doesnt hold water i guess its fine. the shop on the other hand is preamo:smokin:

If you're talking about this,
http://scottkarg.com/asphalt/slides/pics%20002.jpg

If you look, there's a"ridge" at the end, they did tamp the edges. Then they just dumped the excess material at the end. That's how he explained it to me.

The base is 4" #2's(IIRC) then another 2" of crush and run.
The apron they did at the other end of my driveway back in April seems to be holding up well. I guess we shall see.

I wasn't happy with a couple of the workers asking my wife where lunch was as soon as the owner of the company left, fawk you bitches, we ALWAYS give workers food and drink, these beggars only got drinks. :shaking:

The owner of the company was great though.

I'm glad to see everything come together. I do wonder about the quality of the asphalt job, but pictures can be deceiving. If you're happy with it, then the contractor did his job.

So, uhhh... When's the new shop party? :D
