Going to look at an 85 Waggy. Should have a ds front 44 and I would imagine a rear 20. I know this is different from the 2 piece rear 20 from a CJ....but is it worth using? I've been searching for a cab and chassis 14....theyre great but I dont wanna spend $900+! thanks
FSJ AMC20s are way stronger than the CJ ones. they have thicker tubes. just slap 1 peice axles if it doesnt have them already, and a truss and your stronger than a 44.

I have'nt used one, but they are a good axle. I think they all have flanged shafts. I'd say they are good for 37" tires more or less, depending on many other factors. One drawback is 4.56's are the lowest gears commonly available. I think Superior makes 4.88's.

yes, superior now makes 4.88's for 20's

I had axles from an '80 Waggie under my '76 Chero for a few years. It was a D44 ds front and the AMC20 centered diff rear. They came with 1 piece factory axles and drums which were easily changed out to disc using Caddy calipers w/e-brake. I stuffed the Warn Premium Gold hubs in the front ad had no problems with either axle whatsoever. BTW ... I was running with 36" Super Swampers!;) :D Are you gonna build up the Waggie or stuff the axles under something else? IF you are keeping them under the Waggie, do yourself a HUGE favor and make sure that there are lockable hubs on that D44!! If there are no hubs and you find a lever in the glove box ... DITCH THAT POS FOR ANOTHER WAGGIE D44!!! No hubs and the lever = Vaccuum Disco and they are trash! Just my .02
IF you are gonna run the 44 & 20 .. definitely consider the truss over the top and keep/go with the 1 piece axles. As far as gears go 4:56 are good and I think CJ-Jeeper is right with Superior having the 4:88s. Just do the math and make sure the gears are gonna match your needs.
GOOD LUCK!

I am running a waggy 44/20 combo with 37's. So far so good. I have heard people running 38" swampers on them under the waggies so under a light rig like a CJ it should be fine. I also converted to disk brakes while I was at it. The disk brake swap is easy and cheap using mostly stock parts (aftermarket caliper brackets). The best thing about the axle is that they are everywhere and everyone wants a 60 so their cheap.

For a light duty rig with 37" tires or less it will be fine. The ring and pinion in a M20 are very good size but the axles are 1.29" where the 44 is 1.31". I say run it if you are not going to beat your rig.
FSJ M20's come from the factory with one piece axles.

This is a decent axle that is often overlooked.
Just fun that it's a 6 lug design.
Remember, it's the differential section used in the Hummers, so it'll hold to a heavier vehicle with 37's. Axleshafts are pretty much a common thickness... might be the trouble there.
I do know the tubes are thicker than the CJ standard.
